Lytspeed
Hey guys, I just wanted to throw this link out there in case anybody hadn't seen it yet. It's a relatively low viewed YouTube channel from someone named Fran Fernandez. (There is a different name in his HX Edit account, but hey, it's a YouTube channel. :-) ) His Helix LT is running 2.81.1, as is clear in the video. I've listed some bullet points of issues that it shows in this 5-minute video, in case it's not available in all regions. After seeing what this guy's going through, I'm going to hold off on doing anything. I'm going to sit at 2.80 until this is resolved. The only thing that I had noticed so far on my LT at 2.80 is that the volume level edit for the strings on my Variax wouldn't hold when I switched to a patch where I had muted the bottom two. Even though it shows on the LT screen as having the E & A strings at zero, they are at normal volume. Just a quick tweak of the knob for each string and a double-tap to save is an easy on-stage fix, and I was thinking of mapping the pedal controller to make that even easier until a bug fix came out, but now, seeing that people are having issues with the pedals, too, I'm holding off on any updates. First world problems, in my book. Anyway, here are the big, scary issues I saw in Fran's video. I have no idea if he followed the proper procedures when making his update, but he seems pretty thorough in his demo. At one point, there's a genuine panic moment when he gets a black Screen of Death. Not good. (Consider that a trigger warning if you like, fellow Helix users.) HX Edit Garbled preset names in setlist Ineffective patch copy Incorrect screen display Setlist presets disappear completely! Problems persist on reboot. Helix LT Vertical and horizontal noise color bands on display He claims the the joystick doesn't work, but I don't really see that Improper signal chain representation on display "Connection interrupted" message Black Screen of Death (probably at the same time as the preset list blanking, above.) At the time I'm posting this, the video only has 82 views. 83 now, after I've watched it again. I hope this helps Fran out. DunedinDragon
First question, where is this person getting 2.81.1? 2.81 is the only thing listed from Line 6 in the download section for HX Edit. Who knows what this person did... One thing he for SURE did is totally hose up his update. There's NO question about that!!
Lytspeed
It's a Helix LT only update recommended on the support site. Stace
rsvette12
Something really messed up there for sure - only thing I have a problem with is helix edit loosing connection which it never did in 2.7 - line6 hope your listening :)

I hope this helps Fran out. Well now he's up to 87 views. The guy doesn't tell us to much about how he got on with loading the v2.81.1 firmware patch on his LT. You know, any glitches and important stuff like did he back up all his presets, if he did he probably just needs to do a "Global Reset" on the hardware by holding down FS5&6 while powering up. Once he has blown the bugs out he should only have to reload his setlists minus the one that has the flakey presets. If that's the case, it's a question of reloading all 128 slots (if he used them all) from his original back-up files. I mean he did back them up - right? If you look at the screen on his LT when he is showing the corrupted stuff, look in the top right hand corner along side the Snapshot Icon is the Icon for Global EQ. He never mentions how, or why it is on, so I guess he didn't reset the box. Why is it that when there is a gig coming up, or you rely on some hardware to earn a living, people will insist on installing untried new software or firmware. I mean... the bleeding edge? I've got 2.81 on both my studio PC and my live performance laptop and I have consistent HXEdit connections with both Helix units on either computer. I suspect that's because both my PC and Laptop are higher end computers so the manufacturer didn't take any cost saving shortcuts and all my USB ports are direct ports and not hubs. I've never had connection problems on either of them for the last 3 1/2 years.
rsvette12
Well thats good to know but nothing changed here except for update also tried another usb cable - also not using a hub - so its strange

There is something in common (along with other software) with all of the problems Helix 2.80/2.81 has had and this OS. The W>I>N>D>O>W>S registry is NOT your friend and never has been. Add to this the multitudes of configurations from "other" PC software and you have a mess. All this included and mashed together, Helix 2.81 is more stable than 10 ever was in my opinion, and that's why I only play "games" on my PC and leave my important stuff on another OS. I'm sure the "I can load anything on my PC and it works great crowd" has another opinion - As always YMMV . ; )

But both are higher end units running up to date Windows 10 and I maintain them very well and only use them for serious applications...ie, no games or junk apps. That's why I suspect there's a huge difference between different people with the same OS. The specs for building a PC can be quite variable and I suspect it starts with PC vendors taking a lot of latitude to provide a bunch of USB ports that are really just hubs. Makes the price go down but introduces problems.
Lytspeed
Turns out that Fran posted in his YouTube comments that he's back up and running after a factory reset. But still, it's pretty scary. I haven't had the same problems he and other have had either, but as I mentioned before, I haven't updated to 2.81.1 yet. j_hotch
Good to know! Please add "solved" to the post title. This is a great reminder to always follow the advice of doing a backup before and a factory reset after firmware updates.
Lytspeed
@J_hotch, good idea. I changed it to reflect the solution. Stace

His post on UChoob, which says he is back up and running, was posted an hour after I posted the suggetion of doing a reset, both on this forum here and on his channel on YouTube. Surprisingly Jose makes no comment about that. Plus, Jose posted the same video to YouTube twice, both on the same day - 18th August, and then it appears that he spent over a week waiting for someone to fix his issues with the Helix. It must have been very important that he needed it for a stage gig. Or maybe he had aready figured out the problem, but never bothered to delete his pair of videos. Most helpful. Thanks Lytspeed for keeping us up to date, the guy with the problem never did.
