adriatic swell with compressor issue

Have you ever noticed when you're playing swell /ambient stuff and you have effects like the Adriatic swell followed by the glitz reverb and as you play whole notes you're getting an even level but every once in a while with what seems to be the same amount of pick energy the volume jumps .   Could the LA Studio compressor at the end of the path contribute to this?   Have you experienced this and found a way to even it out?

I have the latest firmware.   May try bypassing the compressor at the end of the patch when using the ambient/swell snapshot.

 

Second Question:  what are the advantages of running some ambient effects in parallel  --- say delay on the main DSP path and reverb in parallel.   I understand that if the main path has no ambient effects, you can just adjust the Mix parameter rather than pulling something down into a parallel path. ( I run all mono   )

Hi,

 No, no no, don’t do that - that way lays madness. Using the swell effect is like using your volume knob to sweep from silence to full, so then by adding a compressor after the swell you are almost doing the reverse of that. A compressor is used to make your quiet playing louder and your loud playing quieter.  Putting a compressor after a swell will try to even out the signal. It sort of defeats the purpose of a swell effect.

Now, compressors can be used (and are used) in master chains (with delays and reverbs happening earlier in the signal path), but usually these are adjusted in ways hardly making much sense in a typical guitar rig. IOW: If you keep the settings on the compressor tamed (not much peak reduction), you might get away with it, but in that case you may as well just ditch it. Or simply slap it in front of the delays.

You could for example apply further FX to just the delay signal when running it on a parallel path. So, while your dry signal would remain, well, dry, the wet/delayed signal could be sent through, say, a chorus. As a result, only your delay would be chorused. Can't do that on a straight serial path.

Example: Delay on a parallel path will allow you to add more of the delay by taking the mix above 50%. If you have the delay on the main path and take the mix above 50% tends to kill the dry signal - it really doesn’t work as many people expect. For less muddy delays and reverb, the second path is the way to go.

Just want to add... you can leave the LA Studio Comp where it is if you want to tame the peaks, just be sure to set the LA Studio to "Limiter" rather than "Compressor". That "should" tame the peaks, while leaving all the quieter parts (swells, reverbs, etc...) untouched. 

 

The LA Studio Comp is an LA2A model.... not a stomp box model. It shines at the end of the chain, but only if you don't try to use it like a guitar compressor.
