ADA MP1 - Pornograffitti tone?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any recommendations for Nuno's killer tone on the Pornograffitti album?  He used an ADA MP1 into a Macintosh power amp, then into a BBE Sonic Maximizer.

If you run a power amp into anything but a speaker or a load box, the fire department tends to show up...;)

Anyway, that tone is really just a whole mess of gain, and kinda scooped... pretty much the opposite of everything he's done since. You can probably get reasonably close with anything Marshally, crank the gain and roll back the mids a little.

^^^ this ^^^

I would push the 2204 model with a kinky boost to increase the Marshalls gain even further... then as you say, back off the mids a little.

The Macintosh power amp would have been very transparent compared to the power section on a JCM800... you might find running the 2204 PRE AMP directly into the 4x12 Basketweave Cabinet (eliminating the power section of the amp) to be a little more authentic. That's just a thought based on the setup, I have not tried it myself.

I would avoid any attempt at the Sonic Maximizer... there is a reason there is no model for one inside the Helix :)   (just my half-joking opinion)

If you really want to try something.... throw the "Modulation > Legacy > Dimension" after the cabinet.... set all "SW" controls to OFF then adjust the mix to taste.

But for anyone who found those devices useful, I have magic crystals and magnets for your shoes that will cure everything from headaches to cancer, both for sale in the lobby....;)

The BBE Sonic Maximizer is effectively just a two band compressor, so you can simply use the helix multiband compressor configured for two bands of compression boosting the highs and lows only to get a good approximation of the BBE effect.

It's not a particularly helpful effect in a live situation as you will lose a lot of your clarity in the mix of a band but for recording it can give a good sounding "loudness" effect on both bass and guitars.

I watched my bass player learn that the hard way. It was definitely a good -what not to do- lesson for me as well 20 years ago.

The funny thing, this guy is so smart about that kind of stuff. He knew the result before we even plugged it into -whatever it was we plugged it into.

OP: I would be trying to nail down the cabinet. Once you find an IR that matches Nunos cab, the rest should be pretty easy from there.

I find it interesting that you detailed the pre/power section of his setup but didnt even acknowledge the cab and speakers which are very bit as important as the rest of his chain...and even more so in the virtual world

I've read that he used a cab with Peavey Scorpion speakers.

That will be difficult with the Helix... There is nothing directly similar "that I know of".

IMO... I'd reach for the Hiwatt / Fane cabinet... it's about the closest I can think of. They are more full range than normal cabs, but not as much as EV loaded cabs. That's kind of the grey area the Scropions live in as well.
