Does that trade deficit number include services or just goods? A standard Trump misdirection is to claim a trade deficit in goods while ignoring the overall trade surplus in favor of US when including services.

Goods because Helix is a good, not a service.

My point is that the terms 'trade surplus/deficit' are normally used to include both goods and services when speaking about international trade. It is misleading to talk about an onternational trade deficit in terms of only goods unless that is specified. Just out of curiosity, what is the status of the trade balance between US and Germany when both goods and services are included? The source you quoted earlier should also be able to provide a combined number?

Dude, nobody has a political ax to grind here.  The question was asked, it it was answered.  Nobody isn't trying to mislead anybody.

Goods and services are (obviously) the two components of trade, however the US trade deficit is currently driven entirely by goods, not services.  The number given is what's left over after you calculate, both, services and goods.  There is a surplus in services, but not enough that it compensates for the deficit in trade.

The OP's original query was about the increased price of an imported good, not a service.  There is a deficit in trade between the US and German in goods.  Not sure how to say it any clearer.

The combined numbers are listed for 2018 in one link.  The most current deficit numbers are in the other.

Apologies for the political tangent and thanks for the links to the official data. I'm a little sensitive to the trade stuff. Living in Canada and watching the renegotiation of NAFTA it was irksome to hear your President repeatedly lying being mistaken about important facts. It still is.

So, list price at GC in the USA is $1699, german price is €1589€. At €/$ = 1/1.11, that would be $1763.79. Not all that much more already.

Now, the german price includes 19% VAT. Substract that from €1598 and you're roughly at €1342.85. Which is roughly around $1490.56 - around 200 bucks less than in the USA.

Bottomline: No economical gripes (of whatever sorts) between USA and Germany are the reason for the raised german prices.

Add to this that the Helix is a japanese product built in China, so the USA have pretty little to do with it anyway, regardless of how you put it.

But talking about China, I think we've already found the reason. Given the current situation, it's just clear that prices for many things made in China will rise because the supply is possibly severly limited.

What I don't understand is why UK prices seem to be unaffected at present.

PMT and GAK both have the Floor at £1089, which is £907 if you subtract the 20% VAT. Converting this to USD and the Floor comes out at $1180.

Andertons has it at £1199,  which is $1300 after subtracting VAT.

Yes, the UK has left the EU, but we are still in a transition period, so it seems to me that anyone looking to buy a Helix in the EU would be best served getting one from the UK, as it works out over 300€ cheaper!

Best bargain though, is the limited edition gold Helix at Music Store Germany - 1349€
