Basic Recording Setup

Recommended Posts

Pretty basic question, I have only recorded from my phone and was looking for some basic setup guidance. I am new to the line 6 world and want to be able to record drums and overlay a couple guitar/bass, harmonica etc tracks. I don't have a lot of equipment for recording, I have a single mic, a Pod Go coming, a laptop and a twin reverb amp.

1 - What is some free software (or cheap) to achieve multiple track recording.

2 - Is there any 'needed' hardware or something that would make things a lot easier?

The Pod Go will work fine for recording guitar, but to record drums, you will need an audio interface with as many mic preamps as you want for miking the drum kit.  If you are going to use Edrums, then they typically have a USB output that can be used to record the MIDI signals, but not the actual audio, which would have to be fed to an audio interface.

For vocals, harmonica, anything acoustic, you will need an audio interface.

For DAW (recording software), Cubase is free.  Reaper is free to try out the full version, $60 to register.  For recording, you are also going to need headphones and monitors (speakers).

For free software, I am not familiar with the free version of Cubase, but I sometimes use Audacity for quick stuff.  Usually I use Cubase essentials which is $99.  I am thinking of trying out Reaper since it is suppose to be pretty good and full version is $60.

For audio interface, I use a FocusRite Scarlett 2i4, inexpensive and works nice.
