Dear Line 6, With Love

Dear Line 6,

I'm an avid amp modeler that's been eyeing the amplifi series amplifiers since it was announced. I own many line 6 products ( POD (kidney bean), POD Xt Live, Pod Farm(2), Guitar Port, Line 6 Spider IV 150 , FVB Shortboard MK II, Delay).

Here is where your marketing and engineering departments have failed.

1. Explanation of the FVB Shortboard MK II integration.
Like, Ya....... It's supported.. but in what capacity?

2. How many preset's can be stored on the amp?
Maybe 4? 5? 6?

3.  Can I control on/off different stomp boxes / delay / modulation etc with my FBV Short board?

4. Why did you "NOT" include a USB Port to charge the devices required to operate the amp?
(ipad / iphone / android )

5.  Why do retail outlets much like "Guitar Center" not have a AMPLIFi demo station available with an included USB port to jack in my device and "demo" the amps features as marketed? (this is a no brainer and selling feature)

6.  You should include a "transfer" type of feature for old line 6 users
(pod XT / pod farm / guitar port and general line 6 products). You are confusing and disenfranchising users . We love our presets and want to keep them across platforms. WE work hard to tweak and tune everything to our taste. With every product release you slap us in the face having to create new presets and force us into "another adventure" of finding tones.)

7. This does not apply to me but why not include the line 6 link and variax inputs featured on many other products.

8. The unit features a USB port. (why not hint or discuss with your users what it should be used for?)
Direct Output?  Windows/Mac integration for preset config / Firmware updates direct without a FBV?.

9. Lack of a full manual "POST" product release. You need to fire your documentation team immediately, I can't think of an excuse to use on this one.

10. Say iOS goes away and apple decides to pull the Line 6 AMPLIFi app from the appstore. What are your customers to do? We are screwed beyond using this as a bluetooth speaker. (a good one at that, i digress)

11. Line 6 monkey (drivers) and firmware updates to other products (bearing you own a MK II or FBV) Are smooth and work as advertised. This department is working great, however the design engineers are behind the ball. Modelers should always include a USB port in order to allow for updates and pushes without an additional piece of hardware.

12. WE love the amp, we however hate searching for the name on search engines.... it should have been called line 6 amplify or amp li wifi or something else besides amplifi. When we search for amplifi we find other amplifi"ers" beyond line 6. Youtube, google, bing etc. This was a dumb move.

One major thing I have found with line 6 is the lack of after the sale support. Got a line 6 spider iv??? Want to update the firmware...well you need a FBV for that.  It's complete failure for an electronically capable modeler to have to use an added $200 dollar device to upgrade and "fix" issues that were released from the factory.

You can do better and your users know it also. For most people who own or use line 6 products we are forced to defend using them in live situations due to the lack of "tube quality" on most modelers. This is due to the lack of life and feel that translates from a traditional tube amp to a modeler. The Axe FX product family has done a much better job in this genre. I don't expect a $500 dollar product to compare to a $2500 dollar product. I do however hold line 6 to their mission statement.

Push Boundaries, Make a great product and release a great product with a huge community and support the product for years to come.

Maybe someday a real person from Line 6 will once again acknowledge that they do have users out there in the world. Right now its more like an Amp Modeling Device Crapping Machine.

"uuugghghghhghhg!!! Got a new one for ya! See one the next one is done baking!"

LMAO...

Well, lets get into  line6's face new school.    Facebook / Reddit   /  Reddit.com/r/guitar and this new dumb ideascale bullcrap.

(Another note Line6: forcing users to register on a "second website" to post feed back on a product, via forum link on your own support forums... is just lollipop backwards. Once again, the wrong way.

Clearly this product launch is a complete failure on line'6s part to rush a product out close to NAMM 14. It's bulllollipop. Really.. we deserve better patiently waiting since 09 for a new spider v amp.

Yes a complete and dismal failure... that just happens to have pages of good reviews and won an award at NAMM....

seriously.. it can be something that does not fit your needs... AND not be a failure.

"Four-and-a-half out of five stars."

"Line 6, purveyor of modeling technology as seen in the POD series, is known for pushing the boundaries and its latest product, revealed on the first day of the 2014 NAMM show, certainly demonstrates that innovative streak, big time."

" We all love to play along with our favourite songs and this is by far the most convenient way to do that yet invented."

Gizmodo: http://gizmodo.com/a...-off-1507735372

"Ultimately, Line 6 hasn't really made a product for purists or nerds at all here but for consumers. It's a complete "experience" much the way that other products you buy these days are. It's more than a really loud speaker box. You're not expected to come to the table with much else—except for a guitar and maybe some chops to make the thing sing. The Amplifi is not for everyone, but Line 6 is one of those companies that ha been doing digital long enough that they might actually pull it off. I'm certainly excited to give this amp a try—even if I'm not going to get rid of my Twin and my pedal board any time soon."

If NAMM was just about harmonicas only harmonicas would get mentioned...

but because it's about all musical equipment... we have to hear about silly amps and stuff that we don't want...

it's perfectly ok if you were only interested in the harmonicas....

but every once in a while tuba players need love too.

Great, everyone at NAMM was amazed by a BlueTooth speaker...doesn't sound promising for the industry, does it?

I really don't understand being personally offended by what a company decides to build and sell. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Move on. There's a lot of companies in the modeling game right now making a lot of products. I just don't understand what good it does to focus so much on this product. What if this ends up selling really well for Line 6? Will they still be stupid for making something people want?

Wow, I see a trend here...if anyone posts anything negative it gets attacked.

"If you don't like it, don't buy it. Move on." I am sure that Line6 would not react to a possible customer that way. This is not the way to treat a consumer and a certainly seems quite defensive. Forums are made to discuss all things - pro AND con.

Discussing and disagreement improves the product and customer service.

Well, I wasn't even responding to you. I was responding to the person I quoted, who, btw, seems to have taken up bashing this product release as a new hobby. Which, I guess is his right to do. All I was saying is I don't understand it. Line 6 makes a lot of products I have no interest in owning. They fill a niche in market, though, and Line 6 is trying to sell products to as many different people as possible. This particular seems to have polarized people in a way I've not seen before. It's just odd.

Probably not. Perhaps you should go talk to them? Speaking for myself, the only attack I have seen with respect to you was your personal attack on charlyg. I have to admire him for still being nice to you in the metadata exchange.

Phil - Sorry, not seeing how "move on" means "I don't understand it." & yes, it's obvious you were responding to someone else. I was stating my observation, that is all. No need to get defensive.

Haha... who's getting defensive? It seemed to me you were getting defensive... And by "move on", that's what I mean. If Line 6 made a product that doesn't appeal to a particular individual they need to quit whining about it. I'm not in the sales business, so it's not my job to coddle people or convince to buy something they don't want. If someone doesn't want or need this particular product, that's just fine. I don't understand why they'd spend their time belittling the product and as an extension of doing that, belittling the people who actually do like it.

Really?

Yes, really.

Btw, I'm not even referring to you. You bought the product, and have specific issues with it. That's not whining. What I'm talking about is people who have no intention of buying it or no interest in buying it. They need to build a bridge and get over it.

Really? I see it daily. To a large extent, this is what our society has become. Completely polarized on nearly any topic. Even things that begin as discussions invariably deteriorate into name calling, and one or both sides claiming they've been "offended". And all because the generation of runaway narcissists we've spawned will never be convinced that they are anything but 110% "right" all the time. Even if the issue at hand is entirely subjective and a matter of opinion. And NOWHERE is this more obvious than on an internet forum. Read any one you want...doesn't matter if the topic of discussion is plumbing supplies or tennis shoes. People always behave the same.

All the above is encouraged by the media and the gov't. The media likes it, because controversy = ratings = advertising $$. The politicians revel in it because it gives them something to scream from their bully pulpits, and a guaranteed audience lining up to bark like a seal in agreement.

Here endeth the rant.. :P

125% agreement.

The Internet in general and Internet forums in particular have legitimized bad manners and behavior, and the ability to say things to and about people you'd never say in public. Not good.  I mean, I agree that pros and cons need to be discussed in any product support forum, and I never take it personally if someone hates a product I love (or am ambivilent about), yet lots of people seem to for some reason.  As if someone else's experiences either validate or invalidate our own.  Very strange behavior if you think about it.

Part of it, I believe is that you are not getting a 3 dimensional picture of someone's repsonse or posting.  What was intended (at times) as humor is received as negativism at times.  When you are having a face to face discussion, body language and facial expressions are a big part of communicating.  Online, they are both missing completely.  And the emoticons only help so much.

It's kind of sad really for someone my age (55) because I predate this stuff and have lived on both sides of the Information Age.  I recently removed Facebook and Twitter from my mobile phone for this very reason, telling my "friends" to either call, or email if needs be and that at least my life wasn't best expressed in terms of a "status update"

AMPLIFi was a marketing lie.

Line 6 does not give two lollipops about its user base.

There is nothing I've said here that I wouldn't say to someone face to face.

I get a kick out of the fanbois running to defend everything, then posting "Please, guys, you're hurting the device's feelings" posts.

I'm gonna keep sending daily requests to the company in every possible contact form that they need true representation on the user boards to handle technical questions because I like my HD500, but I hate the customer support of the company. It takes like 1 minute out of my day..which I would probably waste picking my lollipop anyways.

words like "Loud", "reinvented", etc....total BS, the thing's not "loud" enough for (or designed for) use outside the home, nor is it a reinvention of anything.

Some of use actually use our equipment to play shows and stuff and the hype leading up to this was vague yes, but seemed to suggest something other than a toy for practicing in your living room.

I can see the use for this product, but I'll get the Blackstar version minus the bluetooth and the "Tone Matching" (another pile of BS) for half the price if I want something similar to jam at home with. Also, because thier current modeling crushes the X-series modeling in this thing.

Well, having never used this gear, a couple of things still spring to mind:

1. Loud is relevant to the user.  I work with a guy that could drown out most PA's when he's on the phone.

2. Speaking of loud, 75 or 150W are plenty loud in home use where this seems to be aimed at.  That is of course my opinion, but still wouldn't you agree?

3. I think their marketing prior to release was vague, absolutely. But given my points above, it isn't really a lie either is it? Again IMHO.

It's marketing.  When doesn't marketing bend the truth a bit?  Caveat emptor?

I ordered the 75 watt online and really only have myself to blame for not doing a little more homework (taking a road trip to GC) to see if the 150 was more appropriate.  I chatted with a rep online, but that was about it.  It was a calculated risk.

Given my use case, the 75 is probably fine, but it would be nice to have to extra oomph when I wanted it.  Maybe my ears will thank me when I'm 70.

I thought it was a stupid idea.

Then it dawned on me:

You mean I can have my music playing in the living room, and have my Relay G50 plugged in, and if I just feel like picking up my guitar and noodling in the house without having to lug my other gear in, I can? Just grab guitar, turn music off, Relay on, and bam!

Set up one channel with a light dirt tone that goes clean when I back off the volume, and I don't even have to touch my amp? Genius.

I don't know about playing along with a song, but I can see potential for that as well. Who didn't learn their favorites by playing along with a record/cd/tape? Listening to music always inspires me to PLAY music. If I can do that with one device, I damn well will.

I don't need one, but I am very tempted to buy the 150W because I'm sure I will use it.

I played cliffs of dover through the amp and I can tell you first hand, it was an amazing experience and I could've sat there all day with that amp and that song.

I don't have an AMPLIFi and will not be buying one.

I did have a Vetta II for a few years... similar to the $500 AMPLIFi it was 150 watts solid-state.

I can assure you the Vetta was quite loud. Loud enough to gig. I gigged and  toured with it for a few years and played some fairly large places to crowds of more than 1000 people at some shows, never had any problem with the amp not being loud enough.

Is the AMPLIFi loud enough to gig? I don't know as I have never tried it, and I would bet anyone here saying it is not loud enough has also never tried it. I do know a different amp from the same manufacturer of the same wattage and power amp type as the AMPLIFi was quite loud, so I would bet the 150 watt AMPLIFi will get quite loud as well when you want it to, and still sound good at bedroom levels. Well, as good as an amp based on X3 modeling can sound - I would bet it sounds a lot like the Vetta sounded, and most likely much better than the Vetta due to the FRFR speakers, but for around 1/3 the price I paid for my Vetta II.

If and when there is ever a version of AMPLIFi with HD modeling I will be very interested. For now I will pass but I do find AMPLIFi quite interesting and I would bet a bunch of people are going to buy it and love it.

This is the perfect amp for my purposes--I really like it a lot. I've got it (the 75) setup in the corner of my living. I've already built a small library of 10-15 great tones that I like a lot. I'm able to control the thing from my iPad and stream my backing tracks wirelessly back to the amp. The only thing I'm missing (which I'm researching now and will be getting soon) is a wireless guitar system so I can be completely wireless from the amp ... then, I will absolutely love the whole setup and how it all works together. The one hope and concern I have is that Line 6 will do the necessary follow-through to finish the development and refinements on the app, firmware, and tone server... they still have a ways to go here but I'm hopeful.

Now if I only I could find some good "comfortably numb" , "shine on you crazy diamond" and "money" solo tones on that darn tone server. Anyone find any tones that will work for these songs?  If you could let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
