3 dubts about Amplifi. Should I buy?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Hope you all are fine and not affected by the COVID

I'm thinking in buying a new Amplifi, but I have dubts that I do not see officially answered elsewere.

First, about the model: If I buy an Amplifi 75 or 30 even TT will I have space enough? Is there somewhere in Line6' web where I can find the dimensions of them?

Second, about the cloud: I see the videos of how to get a David Gilmour's tone, and it is clear that Amplifi allows amps and cabs emulation and several effects more. But there is not a list of the amplifiers provided nor cabs (the name and the device they were inspired in) nor effects. At least I can't find it in the product page of Line6' web. Can Line6 provide this list?

Third, my main instrument is the guitar, but I also play bass. Can I connect it to the Amplifi? Will I get some bread-and-butter bass amplifier emulations? Perhaps this is answered in 2nd question.

Thanks

Regards

Pablo

Welcome to the forum, Pablo.

I am the owner of three Amplifi products: FX100, 30 and 150. Of the three, I like the 30 the best. It sounds great for a small practice amp.

However... this series never really 'caught fire' and has been virtually abandoned by Line 6 in recent years. They may be still selling them, but it doesn't seem that there's any active development. Hasn't been a firmware update in a couple of years. If you use Apple devices, there's a decent chance that an iOS update at some point will be problematic with the Amplifi series, as Line 6 probably won't provide an update to keep it running.

I would strongly consider something else. There's a 'new kid on the block' - a 40-watt practice amp that has virtually all the features of the Amplifi 30, plus a couple of new functions missing in the 30. It also plays music and backing tracks via Bluetooth and has a large contingent of downloadable tones from 'the cloud' - just like the Amplifi. The one huge difference is, this amp is at the BEGINNING of its development cycle, not a virtual orphan, like the Amplifi. There should be improvements and enhancements on the way. It appears very unlikely that anything new will be added to the Amplifi line..

There's one key advantage of the Amplifi series: it can accommodate a floorboard/foot pedal to change presets on the fly. But it will cost another $150 or more unless you buy a used one. The other device, at its introduction, doesn't support a foot switch, but enterprising users have already developed one, so we may expect the manufacturer to make one available at some point.

I won't mention the name of the competing device, out of respect for Line 6's forum guidelines. But it should be easy to find with a search -- the newer device is one of the hottest things going in recent months.

There are two very clear solutions for the Wi-Fi conundrum. One, get a more powerful router (and doesn’t necessarily mean bigger router in terms of size) and secondly, if you have a large home or one with a complicated layout, get a mesh system www.mcdvoice.com

It's not exactly clear to me how this is relevant to the original post or the previous responses. There have been a number of complaints about the reliability of Bluetooth connections with the Amplifi series, but that doesn't have anything to do with wifi or wifi routers.

However...

Hi, thanks a lot, Cbrillow.

I'm aware of a "bolt" amplifier, or something like this. And I have read users that are not specially happy with the Amplifi devices. Guided for this recomendation, I have searched and found that many Amplifi users complains about the Bluetooth interface, and now I also know that the latest tech in amp emulation is the Helix or HX, following the Pod Go. The HD series seems also to be good, but older like Amplifi, Firehawk, or SpiderV amps may be outdated. And this has reduced dramatically the price I am willing to pay for an Amplifi. And given the Bluetooth issue, I'm now only considering the TT.

However, I'm still interested because there is a characteristic that looks unique to the Amplifi: it is the automatic tone matching. The ability to search among a cloud of tones to find one close to a given one, is something I haven't seen elsewhere. Is there any other product or manufacturer that offer the same?

I have not educated my ears yet to do this task, and having an IA here helping me looks nice. In any case I have a B plan, which is to learn. But it is the one that takes more time.

Thanks

Regards

Pablo

Hi

I was not asking about a WiFi related question but thanks anyway for your answer.

I suppose you could plan to use more than one router and have the main router + maybe a couple of other routers used as access points and then a couple of mesh points to get to the really bad coverage areas MyPrepaidCenter
