HX Effects - Voodoo Lab control switcher - Laney Ironheart - Midi - Footswitch DIN 5 Pins

Bonjour,

- Ampli Laney Ironheart 60 : https://manuals.laney.co.uk/IRT120H_IRT60H_Manual_ML.pdf
- Line 6 HX Effects : https://line6.com/data/6/0a020a3d3f355a6a18827952c/application/pdf/HX%20Effects%202.50%20Owners%20Manual%20-%20French%20.pdf
- Voodoo Lab control switcher : http://www.voodoolab.com/manuals/control_switcher_v1_manual.pdf

Merci d'avance !

DISCLAIMER - I don't own either device, VDL or Laney. The following is entirely my take after reading the manuals.

First, the 5 pin DIN on the Laney is NOT MIDI. No need for the second MIDI cable.

Start by checking the MIDI Channels. By default, the HXFX is on Channel 1 (Global Settings>MIDI/Tap Tempo).

The same should be true of the VDL. If not, follow the instructions in the manual to make it so.

Get two Insert Cables - 1/4" Male TRS to dual 1/4" Male TS.

Plug Insert Cable 1 TRS end into the CHANNEL Jack on the back of the Laney.

Plug the two TS plugs into the VLC jacks 1 and 2.

Plug Insert Cable 2 TRS end into the Boost/Reverb jack on the Laney.

Plug the two TS plugs into the VLC 3 and 4 jacks.

Set the Front Panel switches on the Laney as below (from the manual:

In order to use any footswitches, set Pre-Boost and Clean switches to ON, and Channel to Lead.

You would use CC#s to control each VLC Output separately.

You might want to assign two footswitches to control Boost and Reverb, using CC#s 82 and 83 (VLC defaults) (see below).

You would use PC#s to control groups of VLC Outputs. You might want to use two PC#s to control the Channel switch, PC#1 (or whatever # you want to use) would have VLC Out 1 ON and 2 OFF, PC#2 would have VLC Out 1 OFF and 2 ON (READ THE VLC MANUAL). This might not matter if the Laney has internal Logic that won't allow both to be ON at once, but the minimalist Laney manual is not clear on that point.

In Command Center, Instant Commands (ICs) execute instantly and consecutively (1-6) on Preset Load and Snapshot Change.

Stomp Buttons work only when pressed, after the Preset is loaded.

So, use ICs to set the Channel (IC1), Reverb (IC2) and Boost (IC3) on Preset Load. When you change Snapshots, these settings will remain the same until you change them. For instance, if the preset loads with the Clean Channel ON in Snapshot 1 (the one that was active when you last saved the Preset) using PC#1, and you want to switch to the Lead Channel on Snapshot 2, Save Snapshot 2 with the IC1 (Channel) set to PC#2. If you change back to Snapshot 1, the Clean Channel will again be active.

As to CC VALUES, the VLC manual is not clear on whether the VLC responds to MIDI Standard ON (000) and OFF (127) values.

I would avoid using CCs. Instead, set up PCs like this (remember, you can use any PC#s you want):

PC#3 = Boost and Reverb OFF

PC#4 = Boost OFF Reverb ON

PC#5 = Boost ON Reverb OFF

PC#6 = Boost as Reverb ON

Or any logical combination that makes sense to you. Keep in mind that I don't know which functions are controlled by the Tip and Ring of the TRS jacks plugged into the Laney footswitch jacks. Maybe tip is Boost, maybe it's reverb. Experiment. Have fun!

I know, sounds confusing. Welcome to the Wonderful World of MIDI! You probably have questions. Feel free to ask for clarification.

PC # 3 = Boost et Reverb OFF

PC # 4 = Boost OFF Reverb ON

PC # 5 = Boost ON Reverb OFF

S'amuser!

Je sais, cela semble déroutant. Bienvenue dans le monde merveilleux du MIDI! Vous avez probablement des questions. N'hésitez pas à demander des éclaircissements.

I almost forgot - in Global Settings>MIDI/TapTempo - set "MIDI PC TX" to OFF. That prevents HXFX from sending it's default PC# when loading presets.

VERY IMPORTANT!

Hello rd2rk and thank you very much for these explanations.

Just a piece of information as I wrote above the only footswitch input of the laney is a Din 5 pins. (see the diagrams)

The person from Voodoo Lab that I emailed told me that a 5-pin midi cable was needed to go from laney to Voodoo Lab.

Do you think your explanations are ok if we don't use 1/4 jacks?

Thank you so much ! :-)

Its good ! I managed to find the solution: 8) (Thanks again to rd2rk for his help ;-) )

Hoping that this can be useful for someone.

1: On the Laney amp head you have to activate the Boost, The Clean, the Lead and adjust the reverb you want with the knob.

2: First of all, I recommend resetting the "Voodoo Lab control Switcher": Hold buttons 2 and 3 then connect the power supply. Buttons 2 and 3 flash. Release them then press 1 then 2 then 3 and finally 4.

Disconnect the power supply and reconnect it.

3: To activate Bank PC + CC of the "Voodoo Lab control Switcher": Hold button 3 then connect the power supply. Button 3 flashes. Release it then press buttons 1 and 2.
Disconnect the power supply and reconnect it.

4: Press the desired Line 6 switch (example 01A), then go to "Menu" then "Command center" Select "Footswitch 1" then select CC Togl.

Then select midi channel 1, then CC # 80. Leave Dimval at 0 and Litval at 127.

Save, then exit with the Line 6 swicth "Edit / Exit Mode". Turn off the LEDs 1,2,3,4 of the "Voodoo Lab control Switcher" and press the switch 01A of the HX Effects, it works!

We can repeat the same things on 4 different toogle and control the LEDs 1-2-3-4 of the "Voodoo Lab control Switcher":

Midi 1, CC # 80
Midi 1, CC # 81
Noon 1, CC # 82
Noon 1, CC # 83

5: To finish, activate or deactivate the toogles of the preset to control the leds of the "Voodoo Lab control Switcher" and you can order:
Reverb, clean, lead and boost (since the rhythm channel is the main channel.

Here is if it can be useful for someone!

In any case, it's really exellent, my amp is now midified and the sound is exellent. It is possible to combine each channel with any effect, it's great!

Ensuite selectionner midi channel 1, puis CC# 80.

You have a different model than the manual I found, so I'd need to find the manual for your exact model to be sure, but if everything else is the same, it should work. The DIN connector is just the way they wired it for their footswitch. The 1/4" jacks provided on the model I looked at are simply an alternative for those who don't want to use their pedal. If VDL can provide you an adapter cable, everything should work fine. The instructions related to the HXFX should still apply.

Hello Darkspin,
I have the same configuration as you. Can you send me the wiring diagram you made between line 6, the control switcher and the Laney head.
In fact I have a doubt about the midi In / Out wiring between line 6 and the control switcher.
Thank you

I have no idea what a Woodoo Labal is.

As to the VDL Control Switcher, the GHR100 is a single channel amp, there's nothing to switch.

You mean can you save the gain/eq settings on the GHR100? No, it's not a digital amp and has no preset memories.
