Using As Fx Only

Recommended Posts

I think in going to have to use this pedal as fx only. I can't seem to get the distortions sounding good, nothing seems to cut through & it varies wildly from amp to amp. Probably a lot of it down to my inexperience, but the actual amp distortion sound better to me.

I'm not sure of best way to tackle as I have a few banks of presets made up depending on song.

I'm assuming I could still keep them and when it's in fx only mode (for my distortions) I would have to do some double footwork.

It's either that or stomp box mode....

Can you get the pod hd400 to trigger the amp distortion in stomp box mode? I just don't like the idea of having the pod & another floor switch in front of me... Too much space between pedals.

How are you connecting the PODHD to your amp and what kind of amp do you have ?

I have tried going into power amp of various amps but can't get to work( had other thread about that)

I don't have own amp , use the studio amps . Mainly stacks and sometimes combo amps. I always make sure that I use the right setting, usually stack front .

It's just that the stacks are great quality & make the line 6 distortions sound terrible in comparison.

When in stomp box fx only mode, does it remember anything? Or does it go purely on the dials .Eg if my dials move when packing away etc.

I'm considering for just home use or selling and getting separates though...I have to set up before everyone else if using an unfamiliar amp & it's getting frustrating.

Don't get stuck on "right" or "wrong" outputs, there's no such thing...you're handcuffing yourself if you don't try out different combinations. Those settings are the engineers' "best guess" at an EQ curve that will work for a given type of rig. But no two combo amps or head/cab combinations are gonna sound the same. There's no universalt fit. Nothing will catch fire if you choose a different output setting...try them all before you decide that the Pod isn't for you. Takes a LOT of messing around to get it to sound the way you want. Also, no modeling amp, or pre-amp/fx unit is gonna sound the same from one day to the next if the rest of the rig keeps changing. Consistency is gonna be really hard to achieve that way.

You don't have your own amp and you're using high quality amps provided by the studio.  And you're saying the POD HD400 doesn't sound as good as the high quality amp the studio has.

Well duh........

Yep, use it for effects in the studio and home use through headphones.  The PODHD (especially the 500, Desktop, or Pro) can sound really nice once you connect it to YOUR amp and dial in YOUR tones.  Will ANY modeler sound better than the amp it's trying to model ???????   No............  It might sound very close and be a lot easier to carry around and a lot less expensive.

I will give it a go using fx only mode tonight, I was previously using a boss gt-5 which was more consistent , used a lot at gigs as well. Went with the pod as have line 6 toneport and had great reviews.

If in fx only mode , can I still use it in preset mode? Only have to switch the amp distortion with my presets that usually have distortion .

Even the smaller combo amps sounds better to me

Trade it for an M13...

That has even more things to press on it... Looks like mistakes could be easily made with that many switches (for me anyway(

Just because an amp is small or a combo doesn't mean it's going to NOT sound good.  There's plenty of combo amps, such as the Mesa King Snake with one 12" speaker that sells for $2,500 bucks that sounds really nice.

I'm done with this thread.....

I'm only asking for help mate . On a pod hd forum about my pod hd.

No need for the dramatics.

Not really...you can choose 4 different effects at once, and can interchange three on each of those 4 per set.

Since I have a POD HD500 and know how the M13 works, if you are looking for effects only with the amp sim overhead, the M13 is better suited to that.  It's the purpose it was built for to begin with.  Best of luck sir...

Ok so I used it with one of the studio stacks with a peavey head.

The distortion from the peavey was night and day amazing against the pod. But I have to do a bit of river dance now.

I was thinking of going with separates but that's still the same problem... I got a multi fx so I could use presets & have less to worry about live.

I have read that using powered speakers instead of an amp is also good for the pod hd. I'm assuming it's still not as good as the amp though.

I take it I am stuffed then as I like the "one click" sound from my presets & to get the good distortion from the amp I need to do some double pressing?

I feel your pain. imo the Pod series are great for recording, but I have no further interest in attempting to get anything like a realistic tube amp tone & feel from my unit. I therefore use my pod HD desktop solely for FX only setups as there is no set of settings, be it through a 550W PA, studio monitors (KRK VXT8) or (expensive) 200W home stereo that did it for me.

You most certainly do NOT want to get rid of the HD400 in favour of the M13. This seems like a pointless exercise to me with no benefits at all. You would lose money on the swap, you already have all the same FX blocks as the M13, but you can use more than 4 at a time (M13 does 4 plus noise gate), you can switch more than one at once (so conveniently making lead & rhythm groups of FX), and you have the pedal built in.

The distortion fx are not the strength of the pod fx units, so I suggest you use the output volume or a boost to get your (guitar) amp to the verge of breakup, then the distortion can hold at a limited drive, but with extra boost will take advantage of overdriving the amp pre-amp. You could also experiment with EQ + distortion as a group or comp+eq+dist as a group.. all of which would give a one button press to switch in/out

You are of course, hosed if you wish to channel switch the amp while simultaneously changing fx.. the Pod doesn't do that, thought the Boss GT10/100 does

Thanks for the advice. When I got this it was between pod and gt-10, I will look into the gt-10 again. At next rehearsal I won't use pod at all, there is a h&k switchblade with a presets pedal so that may do me for now but not a long term solution.

I didn't think when I got this of even the possibility of having to channel switch the real amp. I was a bit naive and thought it would just work, but I'm not a gear head and just like playing my guitar.

I am selling it anyway as it just isn't fitting with my sound, even though it does sound great for recording. Gonna look at a multi fx that can channel switch to use the real amp distortion.

Thanks again.

I will do....I really wanted this pedal to work for me , but thinking of the boss gt10 ,even though some may frown on the idea , but you can channel switch the amp and save it in your preset so it's all done in one click. Which is pretty much what I need.

thinking of the boss gt10

A friend has one and he does get some great tones, however I tweaked my HD500 selecting the Treadplate with reverb through my Gorilla amp's power amp in and I think I've actually got a better distortion tone.

I got a gt-10 & I got to say its great. I can trigger the tube stack amp overdrive channel with my effects at studio with one click.

The effects that I have had a quick shot of seem pretty nice too, the looper isn't as awkward to use & the control pedals are really handy, I can quickly boost any of my presets for lead parts & add additional effects without much hassle.

I have only used it tonight but feel more at home with it than I did with the pod.

Haven't tried it with Logic Pro yet & I'm assuming the pod will have it beat on that count but I still have my toneport with gearbox and pod farm , so not going all anti line 6 or anything... Just the live pedal didn't work for me.(tried for 2years now)
