HX Effects Tuner

Just wondering if anyone uses separate tuner with HX Effects because HX Effects tuner is not very dependable.

Not saying it's inaccurate. However, and this is especially true in live situation, the HX Effects tuner display (I have tried the course, fine and strobe settings and do prefer strobe) will bounce all over the place with notes displayed  don't even seem correct. IE I will be getting close to a note (as confirmed with headstock tuner and HX display is bouncing across 3 or 4 different notes)

This has happened to me on two separate HX Effects units. It is a show stopper for me.

Interestingly enough, the tuner on the HX stomp XL seems to be rock solid and bullet proof.

HX Effects firmware is the latest 3.7.1.

I've been using one (mostly) cheap clip-on tuner or another on stage for as long as I can remember. Never fails, easily visible on a dark stage, no toggling in and out of tuner mode or engaging a separate pedal. And unless you're jumping around like EVH in his prime it ain't going anywhere. Just roll off the volume knob, tune, done. Through more years than I can count, I can recall exactly one instance where it fell off the headstock. And the cheapo Snark tuners you can get for about 12 bucks are just as good as the fancier expensive ones. I probably wouldn't use one to set intonation, but for tuning up between songs they work just fine.

The tuner in the Helix family of products is absolutely fine.  I have used it live and in studio: on both Pod Go and Helix.  It's great.  But... it depends what mode you run the tuner in.  The default "fine" is really really frustrating. 

 

The main issue is that the "fine" mode is way too fidgety.  The meter keeps jumping all around and you can't seem to find the center of pitch.  Instead, simply use the "coarse" mode.  It ignores the subtle little changes to the pitch, so you can tune faster without being distracted if you are 1/2 cent off. 

 

If I were to buy an external tuner, I would definitely go with Polytune, so convenient to strum all strings at once and fix what is off.

I have my hx effects tuner in coarse mode. However, I use a separate Boss TU-3 on my board as a tuner. I don't like the included tuner and this topic has been discused in other threads. Try different tunner modes and try by yourself. But yeah, it isn't at the same level as a dedicated tuner imho.
