Pod Hd300 Speakers

Hello guys,

 

I own a Line6 POD HD300. I always play at home, at bedroom levels using my headphones connected at the phones input of the POD. Now, I would like to use some speakers in order to share my sound with others who are in the same room. Unfortunately, I only have headphones... no amp and no speakers... that being said, I think it's time to buy some speakers.

 

I see that the POD HD300 has 2 options:

• XLR for balanced
• 1/4 jacks for unbalanced

What should I buy? Which is better? Please note, I have no other equipment (no PA, no DI) and I am not going serious about spending a lot of money. All I want is to play guitar in my room without headphones, simple as that. My budget is 200 Euro.

 

I did some research and I found these:

• Neusonik NE05 - 139 Euro
• ESI nEar05 - 175 Euro

many people recommend KRK RP5 Rokit G3, but they are quite expensive for me. Should I buy just one single KRK RP5 RoKit G3 or MONO doesn't worth it?

For your bedroom XLR vs 1/4" really doesn't matter, it's more of an issue if your are running cables longer distances.

XLR is technically better, assuming the monitor has balanced inputs, but for you bedroon you would not here the difference.

 

I would definitely get a pair active monitors, especially if you use stereo effects.

I have not personal experience with the monitors you listed, but either of those look decent for 5" drivers, they're both bi-amped, so that's a good.

Also, I would personally go with an 8" driver if you can afford it, especially if you plan on eventually recording and mixing. (you will thank yourself later ;))

These are 8" instead of 5", and M-Audio has a decent repudiation.

First of all, thank you very much for your quick answer :D

 

I am between these two:

• M-Audio BX8 D2 - 222 Euro
• M-Audio BX5 D2 - 159 Euro

It's a matter 5 vs 8:

 

Obviously, the bigger the better as long as I would be able to hear lower frequencies and I think I can save some money to do the right thing and go for BX8-D2, because recording is something that might be interested in soon.

 

However, going with BX8-D2 my concerns are about the the neighbors. I live in a flat, which means I am surrounded by other people living next to me and I am afraid that I am not going to enjoy the BX8 monitors. As I said earlier, I am going to play guitar at bedroom levels. From your experience, do you think that there's going to be a difference between BX8 and BX5 at bedroom level? I mostly play Metallica covers, if that information can help you out upon advising me better.

The 5" would suit your needs.

As for the neighbors, I guess it depends how loud you crank up!!

 

The 8's aren't going to be louder than the 5's at the same listening level, it just that you have more breathing room.

 

As for lifting them up, if are referring to the physics of how they behave in the room for recording/mixing, I wouldn't worry about that for bedroom jamming at all. But typically these would be on a desk, shelf, or stand.

If they are going to be siting on the floor, I personally would not even get studio monitors.

Do you have a hi-fi or bookshelf stereo already? For just jamming that may suit you needs just fine.

I use Youtube backing tracks though my PC speakers, hopefully  I think it should suffice. For recording purposes, I currently use my headphones although it would be really helpful to be able to listen what I am playing to while recording through monitors -- especially -- in case of capturing the whole session in video. For example, check my latest jam if you like.

 

PS: If you know any great Youtube channel or website about recording guitar tips using POD HD, let me know. Just curious...

You can hook your monitors up to your POD HD, connect the POD HD to your PC via USB, and everything will come thru your monitors.

 

You can record the POD HD directly over USB to your DAW.

 

The PC sounds (youtube, Media Player, ect..), will not record. (But you can load an audio file into your DAW as a backing track and haveit in the final mix if you want)

 

If you've never connected your POD HD to your PC, download and run the newest Monkey to get the drivers and HD updates.

 

Sorry, I can't think of any specific youtube channels off hand.

Do I need better XLR cables? I saw there are some XLR which cost about 80 Euro :blink:

No, you don't need to use XLR.

 

You can use XLR, 1/4 balance, or 1/4" unbalanced.
