Using Garageband automation for wah?

In short, I'm looking for a way to record a guitar's output directly into a Mac. then automate wah on that clip, and send it back through the Firehawk FX for final recording into Garageband.

Before getting the Firehawk FX, I used a USB guitar interface and the amps built in to Garageband, then did manual automation for the wah and edited the amp tone as necessary.

Now I like the tones from the Firehawk FX a whole lot better, but I'd still like to manually automate the wah. I'm thinking I could basically do 2 recording "sessions". First, use the FX send before the amp in the signal flow to send the guitar's clean output to garageband for recording, then do the wah automation on the track, then playback the result into the FX return and record the Firehawk's output back into garageband for the final result.

Does this make any sense at all or is there a simpler way to do what I'm trying to do? I'm assuming I'd want to use an external mixer with a USB interface rather than running the FX send directly into the macbook's 1/8" line in.

I'm not very familiar with much beyond very basic recording (in case you couldn't tell!) so any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!
