External expression pedal (Exp A or B) falls asleep, lags reconnecting when moved again

Firmware 1.2, I connected an expression pedal as a volume controller. It falls asleep when not touched for a while and when I needed it again, I had to move it up and down to make it active again. Did I miss something whent setting it up?
