HX Stomp XL. Looks to run 2 guitars in and out of 2 separate speakers for the purpose of a light jam session

I want to jam with a friend and use the unit to have one guitar going into L input and his guitar go into R input and then output to our respective speakers.

I was trying to do this using a single patch and just split the output but I could not figure it out. I ended up making making 2 paths and just putting a basic cab and amp on each one. 

I selected split right after the Main L/R section and hard panned Balance A and Balance B left and right. then in the merge mixer right at the end of the chain, I hard panned again. This seemed to work but the issue I'm having is that even though each input and path is going through the respective path and speaker, there is a very faith DI sound going through the other speaker for each one. Clearly I've done something wrong but no idea what.
