POD HD500 Flash Memory v2.62 RELEASE NOTES

POD HD500 v2.62 is a FREE firmware update that includes additional features and optimizations. It is highly recommended that all POD HD500 users perform this update!

It is also recommended that you back up your current presets by using POD HD500 Edit to create a preset bundle, allowing you to include installing new presets as part of the update process.

The easiest way to perform the update process is by installing the latest version of Line 6 Monkey. Once you've connected your POD HD500 to your computer via USB port (hubs are not supported), Monkey will recognize the unit and take you through the update process. It’s important to update both the USB Firmware (1.04) and Flash Memory (2.62).

The Line 6 Monkey application may be downloaded here.

What's New?
Global EQ — Global EQ is used for compensating for the wide disparity in acoustic environments on tour or when traveling from studio to studio, and is applied to all setlists and presets. Global EQ features three fully parametric bands plus variable low and high cut filters.

To access Global EQ:
  1. Press and hold the VIEW button to open the Setup Menu.
  2. Using the four-way, cursor right until you see the Global EQ screen.
  3. Turn Knob 1 to select the desired EQ band (Low Cut, Low, Mid, High, High Cut) and turn Knobs 2, 3, and/or 4 to adjust the selected band.
  4. To bypass or enable Global EQ, press ENTER.

NOTE—Due to L6 LINK’s flexible routing, Global EQ is not available at this output.

Support for optional Model Packs—Firmware 2.62 supports three new Amp/Cab Model Packs:

Metal Pack—includes models based on* modern heavy gain amps like the Peavey® 5150® and a remastered JCM800
Vintage Pack—includes models based on* classics like the Vox® AC30 Fawn and the Orange® OR80
Bass Pack—includes models based on* an Ampeg® SVT and a GK Gallien-Kruger 800RB

Model Packs can be purchased here.

Variax Presets—Firmware 2.62 adds an additional “VARIAX” setlist of 64 presets, optimized for use with Line 6 Variax guitars. Selecting a preset from this setlist may recall a particular guitar model and tuning in a connected Variax.

Known Issues
Set List Names—If during the update process new presets are optionally loaded to overwrite the previous set, Set List names may not correlate to the new presets appropriately. This is because renaming Set Lists is not a part of the firmware update process. Set List names may be changed in the hardware using a variety of methods:
  • System Reset—Pressing (and holding down) the four-way navigation pad to the left while powering up will perform a Global Settings reset. This action will reset all settings to their factory default and requires a recalibration of the on-board expression pedal. Instructions for pedal calibration can be found here. Due to the pedal recalibration, it is generally recommended to update the Set List names using the manual method described below.
  • Manual—Set Lists may be renamed manually by simply highlighting a Set List name and pressing the SAVE button. Use the four encoders beneath the main display and press SAVE to complete.

The presets in firmware v2.62 correlate to the following Set List names, as seen in the main display from left to right, top to bottom:

BEST OF HD
FX HEAVY
SONGS / STYLE
BASS/ACO/VOC
L6LINK DT
VARIAX

  • “Flip Top” HD Bass Amp Model
Based on* the Ampeg® B-15NF Portaflex®, one of the most popular studio bass amps of all time.
  • Eight New Mic Choices for the “Flip Top” Cab Model
Get your ideal bass tone from the new “Flip Top” HD bass model with eight mic choices based on*:
    • Shure® SM57
    • Sennheiser® 421
    • AKG® D12
    • AKG® D112
    • EV® RE20
    • Shure® SM7B
    • Heil® PR40
    • Neumann® U47
  • “Vintage” HD Mic Preamp Model
A vintage-voiced tube mic preamp based on* the Requisite® Y7. Place this model at any point in the signal chain to give incredible warmth to vocal sounds and guitar and bass tones. Its controls include:
    • Gain: Input Gain
    • HPF: Provides a High-Pass Filter with a range of 20Hz-500Hz
    • LPF: Provides a Low-Pass Filter with a range of 5kHz-20kHz
    • Phase: 0 or 180 degree out of phase (useful when used within parallel signal paths)
    • Output: Output Level
  • Cabinet Model Deep Edit Parameters
These parameters offer more control over the response of the POD HD cab models, allowing more customization than ever. Each cabinet model includes the following controls:
    • Low Cut: Provides a gentle High-Pass Filter with a range of 20Hz-500Hz
    • Res Level: Controls the cabinet’s overall Resonance Level
    • Thump: Controls the cabinet’s Low Frequency Resonance Level
    • Decay: Controls the cabinet’s Resonance over time
Note: Thump and Decay controls are affected by the Resonance Level control. When Res Level is at lower settings these inter-related controls will have minimal effect.

This update also includes a variety of new features and enhancements that make a POD HD500, James Tyler Variax, and DT25 or DT50 guitar amplifier dream rig even more powerful and easy to use.
  • Variax Knobs as Controllers
Variax Tone and Volume knobs can act like expression pedals, controlling different aspects of your tone such as delay time, amp drive, etc. Controllers are capable of driving up to 50+ POD HD parameters simultaneously, making it possible to morph between sounds with a single guitar knob.
  • James Tyler Variax Local Control Options
To provide smooth, intuitive transitions between the modeled and magnetic pickups, you can choose whether the Volume, Tone and Pickup Selector switch will control both the model and magnetic pickups simultaneously, or lock the model and affect only the magnetic pickups. For example, when using both acoustic and electric tones, you can lock the acoustic model controls so that tweaking knobs and switching pickups when playing the electric sound won’t affect the sound of the acoustic. Locking Volume and Tone controls can also be useful when using Variax knobs as Controllers.
Note: Locking the Variax Volume knob will affect both Magnetic and Model while locking the Variax Tone knob will only affect Models.
  • Variax Control Mode (Global/Preset)
Choose whether you want to assign Variax guitar models and Local Control settings globally, or on a per-preset basis. Alternately, you can get complete manual control by selecting:
    • Variax Control: Global
    • Local Control: Unlocked (JTV only)
    • Model: Don’t Force.
  • Refined James Tyler Variax Integration
  • The new input selections “Variax” and “Variax Mags” allow you to assign any configuration of magnetic pickups and Variax models per POD HD preset.

Mag/Model selection is now recalled per preset, allowing you to pick up exactly where you left off – no need to manually enable/disable models or program preset-driven input changes.
  • POD HD/James Tyler Variax Custom Tuning Creation
Now you can create custom Variax tunings for any or all of your POD HD presets. Save and recall them per preset — and get up to 512 unique custom guitar tunings with instant footswitch control.
Bug Fixes
  • Limited resolution for Pitch Glide Min/Max Settings in Controller Assign page – Fixed
Known Issues
  • AC Frequency – When connected to a DT50 or DT25 amplifier, POD HD500 may have its AC Frequency parameter (Setup Page 2) automatically changed. Be sure to check this setting after turning on a connected DT series amplifier.
  • Set List Names – If during the update process new presets are optionally loaded to over-write the previous set, Set List names may not correlate to the new presets appropriately. This is because renaming Set Lists is not a part of the firmware update process. Set List names may be changed in the hardware using a variety of methods:
    • System Reset – Pressing (and holding down) the four-way navigation pad to the left while powering up will perform a Global Settings reset. This action will reset all settings to their factory default and requires a recalibration of the on-board expression pedal. Instructions for pedal calibration can be found here. Due to the pedal recalibration, it is generally recommended to update the Set List names using the manual method described below.
    • Manual - Set Lists may be renamed manually by simply highlighting a Set List name and pressing the Save button. Use the four encoders beneath the main display and press Save to complete.

The presets in firmware v2.02 correlate to the following Set List names, as seen in the main display from left to right, top to bottom:

      FX HEAVY
      SONGS / STYLE
      BASS/ACO/VOC

POD HD500 Flash Memory v1.43 RELEASE NOTES

Important Note:
It is highly recommended that this update is installed in a specific sequence along with POD HD500 Edit v1.08. Please see the installation notes* below.

Bug Fixes
This update addresses a bug which allows invalid data to be introduced to presets. The invalid data is caused by asynchronous communication between the POD HD500 hardware device and the POD HD500 Edit software application. In rare instances recalling presets containing invalid data may cause intermittent high volume events.
Installing POD HD500 firmware v1.43 POD and HD500 Edit v1.08 prevents invalid data from being introduced into presets. During synchronization between POD HD500 and POD HD500 Edit, the hardware displays a “Sync In Progress” message and does not respond to any buttons or knobs until synchronization is complete.

Additionally any presets which contain invalid data are reset to an initialized state. These presets are easily identified as “New Tone (Reset)”.

*Installation Notes
Please follow these steps sequentially:

  • Disconnect any audio connections to the POD HD500, connect to the computer via USB and save a preset Bundle, Set Lists, or individual presets from POD HD Edit v1.06 (if you do not wish to save any existing presets you may skip this step)
  • Quit the POD HD500 Edit app and launch Line 6 Monkey to install POD HD500 Edit v1.08
  • Complete the POD HD500 Edit installation, connect the POD HD500 to your computer’s USB port, and launch Monkey to install POD HD500 Flash Memory v1.43
  • During installation Monkey will ask if you want to keep your presets – click “No”, and complete installation following the on-screen instructions.
  • Launch POD HD500 Edit to restore any saved presets.

    • Manual - Set Lists may be renamed manually by simply highlighting a Set List name and pressing the Save button. Use the four encoders beneath the main display and press Save to complete.
    • System Reset – Pressing (and holding down) the four-way navigation pad to the left while powering up will perform a Global Settings reset. This action will reset all settings to their factory default and requires a recalibration of the on-board expression pedal. Instructions for pedal calibration can be found here. Due to the pedal recalibration, it is generally recommended to update the Set List names using the manual method described above.

The presets in firmware v1.43 correlate to the following Set List names, as seen in the main display from left to right, top to bottom:

POD HD500 Flash Memory v1.40 RELEASE NOTES

POD HD500 v1.40 is a FREE firmware update that includes additional features and bug fixes. It is highly recommended that all POD HD500 users perform this update!

It is also recommended that you backup your current presets by using POD HD500 Edit to create a preset bundle, allowing you to include installing new presets as part of the update process.

The easiest way to perform the update process is by installing the latest version of Line 6 Monkey. Once you've connected your POD HD500 to your computer via USB port (hubs are not supported) Monkey will recognize the unit and take you through the update process. The Line 6 Monkey application may be downloaded here.

What's New?

  • Variable Input Impedance - This feature affects tone and feel because the guitar’s pickups are being “loaded” as they would be by an effect pedal or a tube amplifier. There are eight selectable options which can change the analog circuitry affecting the impedance of the Guitar Input. The options include seven discrete resistor values: 22k, 32k, 70k, 90k, 230k, 1M, 3.5M. There is also an Auto setting. When set to Auto the input impedance can automatically change depending on which amp or effect model is first in the signal chain of the current preset. Impedance settings are saved as part of each preset's input selection.
  • Preset or Global Input Selection – When set to Preset, recalling a preset automatically selects which of the device’s audio inputs are used as the “source” – sort of like a built-in, programmable patchbay. The saved input impedance value will also be recalled with each preset. When set to Global, the input selection and impedance value saved with each preset will be ignored as presets are recalled; allowing presets with a variety of saved input settings to be heard from a single source without having to manually reprogram each preset’s input settings one at a time.
  • Hard Gate – An advanced gate capable of extremely quick response. With controls for hold time, decay rate, and separate open/close thresholds, Hard Gate is ideal for any genre including Metal. It can even be abused to create erratic “sputter” and “splat” effects.
  • Enhanced MIDI Control – Offers control of POD HD500 and POD HD Pro from external standard MIDI controllers. A variety of functions including Footswitch 1-8, Tap Tempo, Tuner, Looper Controls, and Expression Pedals can all be accessed via MIDI. For more details please refer to the latest version of the Advanced User Guide.
  • New Presets – This firmware includes lots of new presets. Many of the pre-existing Set Lists have gotten new presets and reordered based on customer feedback. The “BASS/ACO/VOC” Set List includes presets which provide a starting point for bass, acoustic guitar, and vocal processing. The Set List titled “L6LINK <-> DT” provides a starting point for users connecting a POD HD500 to a DT Series amplifier. Note in this Set List presets 7A-D may not produce audio without a Variax connected and/or monitoring the FX Send output – these particular presets were created to illustrate just one of the approaches to getting amplified electric and direct (FOH) acoustic instruments from a single guitar and preset.

Bug Fixes
  • Global Tempo Sync – Setting Tempo Sync (Setup Page 6) to Global does not function properly - FIXED
  • Tuner Mute – When Tuner is set to mute sound is still audible from FX loop send and digital outputs - FIXED
  • Tap Tempo MIDI – Rapidly sending MIDI assigned to Tap FS may drop messages - FIXED
  • Delay Model Signal Boost – Many delay models provide undesirable volume boost when enabled - FIXED
  • FX Loop – In a mono configuration the FX loop does not sum left/right signal properly – FIXED
  • Frequency Shifter – Frequency Shifter model skips 1Hz setting - FIXED
  • Multi-Head Delay – Presets do not recall correct delay time when Time is set to note value - FIXED

Known Issues
  • POD HD500 Edit – The current version of POD HD500 Edit (v1.06) does not provide provisions to control Variable Input Impedance nor Global Input Selection parameters. These features are currently only accessible within the POD HD500 hardware GUI.
  • Manual - Set Lists may be renamed manually by simply highlighting a Set List name and pressing the Save button. Use the four encoders beneath the main display and press Save to complete.

The presets in firmware v1.4.0 correlate to the following Set List names, as seen in the main display from left to right, top to bottom:

    BEST OF HD
    FX HEAVY
    SONGS / STYLE
    BASS/ACO/VOC
    L6LINK <-> DT
    USER 1
    USER 2
    USER 3

  • System Reset – Pressing (and holding down) the four-way navigation pad to the left while powering up will perform a Global Settings reset. A Note about Presets:

Line 6 Monkey will correctly translate your presets created on previous versions of Firmware to include appropriate default settings for the new amp parameters included in the new v.1.31 firmware.

If you've saved Presets created with an earlier versions of POD HD500 firmware and Edit software and want to load them, be sure to use the latest version of POD HD500 Edit (v1.03 or above) software to be sure your presets are being properly translated. Restoring Presets created with earlier versions of POD HD500 firmware using the MIDI sysex dump feature will cause the new amp parameters to be improperly set, incurring unexpected results.

POD HD500 Flash Memory Version 1.22 RELEASE NOTES

What’s new in firmware version 1.22?

  • Greatly reduced audio burst when switching between presets with onboard EXP pedals at minimum

  • Greatly improved preset switching time

  • Amp model Drive knob parameter not accessing its minimum value - FIXED**

  • Incorrect knob positions displayed when saving preset from amp model edit page - FIXED

  • Mixer Pan parameter displayed inaccurately - FIXED

  • 4 Band Shift EQ and Parametric EQ frequency mismatch between left and right channels - FIXED

  • Output signal may become muted upon repeatedly adding and removing FX Loop Block - FIXED

* If retaining the POD HD500 presets, it is vital to download and use the latest version of Monkey in order for presets to sound as they did prior to the update. Please note this only affects presets with the Drive knob at lower gain settings.

** The amp model Drive parameter was discovered to be limited as it was not reaching its minimum setting, causing many users to experience distorted audio with relatively high output guitar pickups. It is important to note that while the Drive is indeed being reduced, there may not be a significant decrease to the apparent volume due to some intelligent, automatic gain make-up. This is intentional and by design, making it possible to get a clean tone without losing overall volume. While guitarists with relatively low output pickups may not notice a significant difference within the lower part of the Drive knob, guitarists using humbuckers or relatively high output pickups should be able to back out of distortion much more easily.
