My 59 is smooth and quiet when changing tones and tuning directly connected to an amp with the 2 firmware update(and 1.9).

Are you connected to a computer and running Workbench 2? The manual states that there will be noise when changing settings while connected to the Workbench HD. I hear noise when I change settings on my 59.
