Just wanted to share with anyone else that's having trouble updating firmware using a MacBook Pro Retina. The USB3 ports on the MBPr are underpowered and/or have problems with some USB2 devices (they won't power some M-Audio midi controllers for example). This caused problems while I was trying to update the Pocket Pod firmware. My solution was using a powered thunderbolt to USB hub, problem solved. Hopefully this will save someone else a headache.
