Fair guess... would an adapter from 3.5mm to an xlr will work? if not, would you suggest any cheap(!) xlr microphones?

Ok first of all I'm a newbie here, The thing is that I don't own an XLR microphone yet, I have a simple microphone with a regular 3.5mm jack and I have an adapter to 6.3mm which I connect to the instrument port. Apparently my UX2 can't get any sound from it and I don't know why... tried the same port with my guitar with gear box and it works perfectly. Any ideas why it doesn't work with a simple micorphone and what can I do? Thanks in advance!
