Built A Better Variax Vdi Cable
Glockster replied to joebar23's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Hi Dave, Thanks for the reply which by the way is spoken like a true BICSI tech. Essentially Cat 7's individual pair shielding plus overall shield would be overkill? Well, I like overkill at times! -

JTV-89F Locking Tuners?
Glockster replied to Glockster's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I've always set the fine tuners just a bit higher than mid-point on their threads when restringing I also have a Tremol-No which locks my bridge down making the whole process much easier. You two might like the guitar I'm currently building, I have a NOS Fender System One bridge and a vintage Strat 1-piece MIJ swamp ash contemporary body factory routed for the FS1. I abandoned the Fender locking nut because it's just plain.......hideous and will use staggered height tuners and an LSR. If you've never played an FS1 Strat you don't know what you're missing, the bridge is a mechanical work of art and adds a tremendous amount of sustain... -

JTV-89F Locking Tuners?

Please clarify, are your referring to the nut on the tuner or locking nut? If the locking nut why would any modifications be required? -

Still no one knows if Planet Waves Auto-Trim locking tuners will work in an 89F without modification? -

Hey Palico, You're welcome! Now about those locking tuners for an 89F, anybody? -
Built A Better Variax Vdi Cable

Has anyone tried Cat 7 cable for the VDI cable? Cat 5/5e is rather dated technology having since been surpassed by both Cat 6 and 7 with Cat 8 on the horizon. With Cat 7 each pair is shielded as well all four pairs. Also what is the pin-out for the VDI cable or is it straight thru? Thanks... -

JTV-89F Locking Tuners?
Glockster replied to Glockster's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Hey there psarkissian, Yes I am aware the "F" indicates Floyd Rose -in this case a licensed Graph Tech variant- Double Locking tremolo bridge. Just need to confirm the Planet Waves Auto-Trim tuners will fit without ANY modifications to the 89F?? Hi MaxTravelor, Yes again, it makes string changes a breeze. I know it's redundant on a double locking system however like I said in my OP I have become spoiled over the years with every guitar even my acoustics sporting locking tuners. I have never tried the Plant Waves Auto-Trim locking tuners but it sure would mean no more "dikes" to keep in my case or gig bag. Plus, Floyd Rose is now offering their Turbo Trem Arm which has a built in allen wrench meaning no more wrench caddy's screwed to the backside of my headstocks and/or wrenches to misplace or lose. About an hour on the phone with Graph Tech and Floyd Rose assures me the Turbo Trem Arm will work with the bridge on the 89F. Call me a freak but 40+ years as an electrician or electrical contractor now retired I have seen and held my fair share of tools and I'm really enjoying living a tool-less if not less tools life... -

Okay further research suggests that Planet Waves Auto-Trim tuners should drop right in an 89/89F, can someone please confirm this? I don't want to drill new anti-rotation holes if unnecessary. -
JTV-89F Locking Tuners?
Glockster replied to Glockster's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
The "F" has the FR bridge I wouldn't think it comes with locking tuners since it might be considered redundant. Info I've found indicates sealed 16:1 tuners no mention of locking... -
I just ordered a new JTV-89F and I am very much looking forward to its arrival. I would however prefer locking tuners, I've been spoiled over the years and can't live without them. What locking tuners will work on the JTV-89F? Thanks in advance!

JTV-89F Neck Profile and Fretboard Radius
Glockster replied to Glockster's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Yes thank you again psarkissian, with the new measurements and my confirming them for profile, my JTV-89F in Blood Red should ship 3/9/17 if all goes as planned. -

Okay then, I guess I was wrong about the accuracy of the specs. At least psarkissian clarified. -
JTV-89F Neck Profile and Fretboard Radius

When I spoke to Jelena earlier she informed me the neck was fashioned similar to an Ibanez RG neck, trouble with that AFAIK an RG is available with more than one neck. Fortunately, a friend has three Ibanez's so I will head down to his place later this week bringing my favorite Strat and do some pseudo-scientific comparisons. Either way, I will order the 89F giving it a thorough test drive before I make my final decision. As a side note, I was also informed the Helix will be getting Workbench HD capability soon. I too am very interested in having my guitar and pedal communicate with and control each other, that to me is just sick. Now if only Line 6 would consider making integral full wireless we'd surely be leaping into the 21st century with both feet firmly planted. One day there'll be no more wires, it's only a matter of time as a retired electrical contractor I'm tired of looking at wires, 40+ years is enough! My current dream rig would be a "playable for me neck" 89F, Firehawk 1500 -powered speaker ONLY no modeling- with a Helix pedal all fully wireless with a battery in the pedal meaning only a power cord for the Firehawk. It would be just awesome if Line 6 brought the Helix up to Fractal Axe-Fx XL+ tonal quality but time is on Line 6's side. Once the 89F arrives I will post what I find out about neck specs but I rest confident psarkissian got'em right!! -
JTV-89F Neck Profile and Fretboard Radius

I'm with you on this one specracer986, the description verbiage doesn't match the specs but, the 89 is targeted from what I can determine for "heavier" style playing where a thick, flat and wide neck is more the norm. I still want to get one because for me it's the modeling capabilities I'm after and just do NOT like the looks of the 69. A neck can be profiled by any competent luthier addressing the fretboard radius is a bit more difficult but a custom neck would not be out of the question for me. Having one guitar that sounds like many makes life SO much easier... YMMV -

Thanks psarkissian, I spoke w/Jelena in Tech Support earlier who emailed me that same link. Yeah that makes for a pretty thick neck that is definitely flat across the board. Was really hoping for a profile along the lines of a Fender Strat w/Modern C profile and a compound FB radius of 10" - 16". I'll have to order it and see if my Luthier can work his magic otherwise it'll have to be returned, sadly I wasn't blessed w/OEM long fingers. I could make or have made a completely custom neck though, if the modeling lives up to the hype I'd be selling a lot of guitars for recording so the budget would exist for a custom neck. All things yet to be determined. Thanks again, your customer support ROCKS!!! -
JTV-89F Neck Profile and Fretboard Radius

^^^ Ditto ^^^ I'm in the same boat, looking to purchase one too just don't want to send it back due to an uncomfortable neck profile. I've found conflicting information, some complaining the neck is wide and thick but has three mounting holes, all the images I've found show four mounting holes. Has the neck changed on the 89? -
Hi Newbie here, I did a search but came up blank and there's precious little technical information available on the Line 6 Variax web pages. Does anyone know the neck profile and fretboard radius of the 2017 JTV-89F? I have found discussions where there aren't too many options if you don't like the neck save for putting the guitar in the hands of a competent luthier. Thanks in advance...
