OK - thanks for confirming. Would be a nice feature to add in the future since it probably wouldn't require additional DSP or anything like that.

Is there a way to assign a footswitch so that the effect is only enabled while the footswitch is being pressed (and then turns back off when the footswitch is released)?

There are four separate LCD modules on the "UI PCB". Individual LCD modules can be replaced, an LCD module has part number "50-02-0081". If you find a willing tech there is also a chance that the bad backlighting LED could be replaced.
