Plugging a HD500x into amps FX return - Volume range?

Hi Guys,

Apologies if this has been explained before in another post however after searching for a while, I can;t seem to find a reference to this.

I'm currently using a HD500x with a Peavey Classic 30.

I used the 4 cable method originally and had good results using the cleans of my amps preamp section, then toggling the higher gain settings by bypassing the preamp.

The issue was that the C30 has no master volume control and so volume matching patches was too difficult. As a result, turning up the amp affected the clean channel, but was markedly quieter when the preamp was bypassed.

In the end I gave up and tried to go direct into the amp's fx loop send. But the problem I'm facing now is that I can get nowhere near the kinds of volume levels I had when using the amp standalone. I've tried messing with output modes, placing transparent eqs on +17db etc.

I was wondering if anyone had a solution for me?

Ideally I'd love to use the 4CM, but will use the 2CM if this gives me the 'volume adjustment on the fly' capability that I'm looking for.

Any advice would be appreciated guys.

Kind regards,

John

Set the output switch next to the expression pedal to line instead of amp that will give you more.I send my HD500 patches into about 4 different tube amps this way and have plenty of level.Your Peavy may not play well with the HD unit.I use a Fender HRDLX/BDRI/Egnater Tweaker head and have no problems with level.

Good Luck!
