ANNOUNCING: MIDI MOBILIZER™ AND RIG REMOTE™    Bookmark and Share

Demo of the new MIDI Mobilizer™ and Planet Waves® Rig Remote™ Application featured at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference 2009

When used with the upcoming Planet Waves® Rig Remote™ application for Apple® iPhone™ and iPod® touch, the MIDI Mobilizer™ gives guitarists the freedom to control Line 6 Variax® digital modeling guitars and Vetta™ II digital modeling amplifiers.

The Rig Remote app features an attractive graphical display that takes a nod from the Line 6 software commonly used to adjust Line 6 gear via personal computers. The innovative Multi-Touch user interface makes it simple for iPhone and iPod touch users to scroll, choose and adjust models of amps, guitars, pickups, pickup placement, alternate tuning and more. Guitarists can easily save their favorite settings and apply them to any Variax guitar or Vetta II amplifier.

Marcus Ryle, Line 6 co-founder and SVP of research and development, demonstrated a prototype at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). He adjusted the tone of a Vetta™ II digital modeling amplifier and changed the tuning of a Variax® digital modeling guitar from the palm of his hand. "With the MIDI Mobilizer," he remarked, "the iPhone becomes the most portable and versatile editor and tone storage device for your Line 6 gear. Finding the perfect tone has never been easier."

MIDI Mobilizer and Rig Remote 1.0 are currently in final development, with pricing, availability, and more detail on the complete feature set to be announced at a future date.

MIDI MOBILIZER AND RIG REMOTE

What's happening?
At the 2009 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Line 6 and D'Addario announced the development of the MIDI Mobilizer™, a portable Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) device, and Planet Waves® Rig Remote™ software for use with Apple iPhone™ and iPod touch® using OS 3.0.

Line 6 demonstrated how iPhone and iPod touch, when used with MIDI Mobilizer and Rig Remote, can now become the single most portable and versatile editors and tone storage devices for Line 6 gear.

What is Planet Waves and what is its relationship with Line 6?
Planet Waves is a very cool division of D'Addario, the world's leading producer of guitar strings, drumheads, reeds and more. Planet Waves markets a full range of guitar-related accessories including two popular iPhone applications, Chordmaster and Scale Wizard. They will develop and sell Rig Remote software.

Line 6 will manufacture and sell MIDI Mobilizer hardware, the first hardware of its type.

Can I get MIDI Mobilizer and Rig Remote? How much do they cost?
At this time, there are no details about release date, availability or price. (Real and functional hardware and software were shown at WWDC but it will take some time to shepherd this product from prototype to production.) To be the first to know when they are available, sign up for our mailing list here.

What Line 6 products will be supported by this new hardware and software?
We are currently exploring the possibility of supporting many Line 6 products with MIDI Mobilizer and Rig Remote. We do intend to offer the functionality shown in the WWDC demo to many different products.

Why did you choose Vetta II and Variax for the iPhone demo at WWDC?
We chose Vetta II digital modeling amplifier and Variax digital modeling guitar because of their combined rich feature set. Their flexibility and connectivity perfectly demonstrated the possibilities of this platform and the new capabilities of the iPhone. The choice produced a truly compelling demo.

LINE 6, VARIAX, VETTA II AND DIGITAL MODELING

What is Line 6?
Line 6 is a leading maker of innovative music-creation products. The company has produced best-selling guitar amplifiers, world-renowned effect processors, and more that are celebrated by world-traveled artists, world-class producers and bedroom superstars bent on world-domination.

What is digital modeling?
Digital modeling technology, which was pioneered by Line 6, makes it possible to put the sounds of hundreds of amps, guitars and effects into one system. It greatly simplifies the amount of gear needed for a guitarist to play a wide range of sounds.
Put simply, Line 6 guitars model the sounds of other guitars and Line 6 amplifiers model the sounds of other amplifiers and effects.

What is a Vetta II?
Vetta II is an award-winning digital modeling guitar amplifier from Line 6. Famed for its tonal versatility and incomparable flexibility, Vetta II features models of 80 guitar amplifiers, 80+ effects and more, plus a comprehensive set of analog and digital inputs and outputs. It is "easily the most versatile and innovative amp of its type" (Guitar Player magazine), "a truly stunning piece of modelling engineering" (MI Pro magazine) and "worth every cent" (Down Beat magazine).

What is a Variax?
Variax is an award-winning digital modeling guitar from Line 6. Variax guitars give guitarists accurate models of acoustic and electric guitar tones, plus sitar and banjo tones, all in one instrument. They have been referred to as a "paradigm-shifting innovation" (Gig magazine), an "ingenious invention" (Guitarist magazine) and "a godsend" (Onstage magazine).

MIDI AND ITS BENEFITS

What is MIDI?
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is what musical instruments and electronics use to communicate with each other. Drum machines, synthesizers, digital pianos, samplers and computers can all communicate via MIDI.

How does MIDI work?
A MIDI-enabled device (like a MIDI keyboard) sends MIDI data to computers and musical instruments. This data is simply a set of instructions, not musical sounds, and it can be used to control computers and musical instruments in a variety of ways.

For example, when connected to a computer sequencer a MIDI keyboard can trigger virtually any sound and turn itself into virtually any instrument.

How is MIDI used?
MIDI is used mainly by musicians to create music but it has a wide variety of applications. Ringtones to movie scores, theme-park rides to Las Vegas fountains, MIDI affords incredible freedom and flexibility.

When MIDI data, unlike an audio signal produced by a non-MIDI instrument, is recorded into a computer musicians have total freedom over its pitch, tempo, intensity, and other musical parameters. (Karaoke songs are commonly recorded with MIDI, which is why you can adjust the pitch without affecting the tempo.)

Guitarists use MIDI to quickly and easily change the settings of their amplifiers (like the Line 6 Vetta II) and effects.

What can MIDI do for me?
Whether you're a musician, a production designer, a gamer, a network administrator, or just interested in making your life easier, MIDI can provide you with the flexibility you deserve.
