dual action truss rod on jtv59
grumol replied to grumol's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
another way of putting it, is that a dual action rod tightens in both directions, i.e., righty tighty, lefty tighty -- only the resulting force being applied is reversed if you try that with a single action rod, you'll unscrew the nut, which is why i was initially hesitant to continue turning again, this is a superior design, so don't think it needs to be kept a secret of course, it is possible that this feature was added by world musical instruments, i believe the korean manufacturer, and line 6 wasn't aware of it -- but judging by the quality of their instruments, world doesn't seem to need any guidance in their craft -
dual action truss rod on jtv59

well, i'm not the voice of authority on this, but i can confirm it, at least on my 59, having worked on my own guitars for years, and this being the first dual action rod i've come across -- it is exactly as cruisin described, it both pushes and pulls, and therefore it is able to remove a backbow -- i have an old matsumoku washburn that has a single action rod, and when the rod was totally slack and tuned to pitch, it had a back bow -- if this had been the rod in my 59, i could have continued turning counter clockwise from the slack, neutral, position, and it would have begun tightening again, this time removing the backbow and increasing relief -- but as it was not dual action, i sanded the maple fretboard to remove the slight back bow, and played it that way for years -
dual action truss rod on jtv59

thanks, the small increments, letting it settle part i knew, but this is the first dual-action rod i've dealt with, i just assumed the 59 had single action "baseball bat"? -- well, i wouldn't go that far, i think its meant to mimic a 59 lp, not an earlier -- but i can say that coming from a 70s hagstrom swede, it was a change, but overall a comfortable one, once my hand adapted to it -- i had initially planned on shaving the neck, but now i wouldn't touch it, too concerned that it is where that beautiful sound, even unplugged, is coming from -
am i the only one who didn't know this? -- i flew from the desert to the great lakes, and after a bit noticed a lot of string buzzing, figured the truss rod needed adjusting, so i wanted to back off on the truss rod adjustment, give the neck a slight relief, since it had none at all, but found the adjusting hex nut already slack, as in, no tension, and a slight turn clockwise did nothing - -- so turning a little more clockwise, i start getting tension, but of course, wrong tension -- - took about an hour before i remembered that some guitars have a dual action rod, i.e., it gets tighter in both directions, and theres a neutral spot where it just spins -- i guess the extreme humidity change had allowed the rod to enter the neutral position -- finally got up the courage to begin turning counter clockwise, fearing that i'm undoing the nut off the end of the truss rod, and sure enough, it went through the neutral zone, and then started tightening, this time giving the slight bit of relief i needed but you all know this, right? -- anyway, love this guitar

i want to avoid "wearing out" any of the electronic connections on my new 59 -- this will now become my primary guitar, and i play 3/4 hrs/day, have for years, so i'm concerned about this "in and out" with the battery, since, unlike my laptop, it doesn't charge when connected -- i just keep picturing the contacts wearing out, etc. -- i have a used podxt live, and could buy a vdi cable, power the 59 with that, and, i believe, transmit the digital or analog signal through that cable(?) -- i mean, are people who are playing this guitar regularly doing it just with this rechargeable battery? -- i can see on an occasional basis, but doesn't seem an efficient way to power the guitar on a daily basis? -- also, will the 59 power with a trs cable like my v300 did? thanks again

need to restore V600 to factory presets
grumol replied to grumol's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
ok, i'll be careful with that -- and i suppose that the limitations of the pod will become apparent at some point, but for now, after the session i spent yesterday with the 59 and the xt live, i couldn't be happier -- and having just bought the 59, i'd like to avoid the expense of a new hd500x thanks -

ok, but what about powering the jtv with the vdi connection? or does the vdi cable not do that? i'm concerned that just using the rechargeable lithium will involve many cycles of insert/reinsert, leading to something getting broken, as i have no way to charge it without removing it from the 59 -
need to restore V600 to factory presets
grumol replied to grumol's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
sorry guys, i'm lost here -- but to recap, i returned the V600, and today received my new jtv59, which i am absolutely in love with -- i tried it out on the mag pickups while the battery was charging, and was amazed at how well the humbuckers sounded, absolutely the best sound i've gotten out of any of my les paul type guitars -- and this is before i even got into the models, which are also great -- the neck, the workmanship, the setup, i was really impressed -- so i have to keep it, and sell a couple of my older guitars, but in the meantime, i did receive the used podxt live, which i can return, but i'm also quite impressed with it(for only 129 used) -- so my question: can"t i use the usb interface that came with my jtv to use workbenchhd and justplay thru the pod xt live with a regular guitar cable? -- will i not be able to play thru the pod using a vdi cable? -
need to restore V600 to factory presets
grumol replied to grumol's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
very enlightening -- i don't have the hd500, but i will have a used pod xt live, arriving tomorrow -- however, i have found that although i can play on a strat-style neck, i really miss the gibson style, which is what i've played for many years, so i'm returning the 600 to gc, and have a jtv-59 coming from them to try out -- however, wanting to keep the price down a bit, i will also be returning the new jtv, and assuming all goes well, i'll be looking for a used one -- i will keep the xt live to use with the jtv the big plus of the 600 for me was having the tele sounds, which i just love -- even with a coil tap on my les paul style guitar, i can't get true tele or strat sounds, due to the scale length -- but i have read on this forum that with the jtv59, you still get the tele/strat sound, even if it may involve some tweeking -- and i'm totally sold on using the workbench software to modify things as needed, as opposed to my never ending swapping of pickups, in search of the "perfect" tone -
need to restore V600 to factory presets

thanks, silverhead -- (and hello, i live near kingston, ontario part of the year) -- this 600 is on trial, i love the sounds, and the guitar, but may be returning it, due to my concerns re: availability of parts -- would a new standard also come with the usb interface? -- the 600 really was a good deal, almost mint condition, with the xps-ab, all for 299, but i hadn't factored in the cost of an interface, i will need to decide at some point whether to buy the usb interface and keep the 600, or put the 399 that i would then have spent towards the purchase of a new standard -
just received my 600, and i am totally blown away -- only problem is after messing with it for a while, i realize that the po (i got it from guitar center, so no contact with po) customized about half of the preset models(not just the 2 "custom" banks) -- its ok cause i think he/she did a great job, put in some incredible models, including a bunch of alternate tunings -- but for instance, i'm missing all the "special" models, and numerous other ones have been altered -- i think the ones that are there are all where they're supposed to be, so its not that problem i read about where models are in the wrong locations, or randomly changing their locations -- so this 600 came with the xps-ab for power, but am i now supposed to buy that usb interface in order to use workbench and restore the factory presets?

variax 600 reliability, serviceability
grumol replied to grumol's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
thanks again -- i just missed a V700 yesterday, for unreal 249 usd, but i already had the 600 coming -- anyone know what the lightest legacy variax is?(i have back problems) -- or maybe a standard, if it is light with guitar center i get to try out the 600, to have the variax "experience", then return it if i decide on a different model, i just take it in to the local store, pay $20 -- its worth it to spend a couple weeks trying out the different sounds, but i'm not committed to keeping the 600, unless i feel its the best variax for me -- and that will primarily have to do with the feel, including the weight, and the availability of parts -
variax 600 reliability, serviceability
grumol replied to grumol's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
thanks for that information -- it seems that on the Full Compass site, looking at the older, legacy parts, i see a lot of 300, 500, and 700 parts, very little 600 -- there are a lot of used V300s for sale, and even some V700s, maybe i'd be better off with one of those? -
I'll be trying out a used V600 from gc, supposedly in "excellent" condition, and so i'm trying to gather as much info as i can before it gets here, to help me make a decision about whether to keep it -- i think i already know i'll like the sounds, probably the feel, but i'm a bit concerned about the technology -- i'm used to working on my guitars, certainly as far as pickups, wiring,i'm concerned that when i search "problems" on the forum, seems most are addressed by "take it to an authorized repair shop" -- i guess these are not guitars that i can maintain/repair myself? -- i admit i'm someone who is used to doing my own computer repair, etc., and have never taken anything to a "authorized" repair place -- i certainly don't have anyone mess with my guitars, including refretting, and building my own -- i'm not saying i would dismiss owning a variax because of this, but i'd just like to know what i may be getting into -- also, maybe i'd be better off with one of the current models, like the standard, rather than a legacy model, as i wonder about the availability of parts for the 600? I mean, my 71 hagstrom will still be doing its thing long after i'm gone, or if necessary, a quick fix will get it back in action -- but my 99 thinkpad, once "cutting edge", is almost worthless, due to inherent limitations to its design, which make it incompatible with most types of interface -- i wouldn't want to be in the same place if i keep the 600 a used guitar is usually a good idea, and depending on the market, can even be an investment -- with some occasional fretwork, can go on about forever -- but maybe this is not the case for a variax? -- and maybe, as a much more advanced piece of technology, it presents many more potential problems, which can only be fixed by an "authorized repair facility", and only if the parts are available? thanks for any input.
