@Schmalle So this is why I'm confused... I'm in Stop mode - one block per switch I removed all effects/blocks from all switches But I still couldn't assign FX Loop 1 to any switch So I checked signal flow and there was a block assigned to send 1 How can this be? I removed all effects and blocks from all switches - shouldn't that mean there are zero blocks in the signal chain? Hence my questions, did it come from a previously deleted effect or something?
-
Thanks @codamedia & @datacommando much appreciated! So I set all switches to none but still couldn't assign Loop 1. I then checked signal flow and found a block with send 1 assigned, after deleting, I could assign loop 1. Questions (if you have time): I'm in stomp mode, how can you have a block that isn't assigned to a switch? Could it be left over from a block I previously deleted? Does that mean that removing an effect doesn't necessarily remove its block? Not sure I understand what happened so any help/guidance would be much appreciated. Cheers and thanks again for your suggestions, Ben

Thanks for the reply and sorry for that late response, didn’t have notifications on. Will troubleshoot this tomorrow and report back. Cheers, Ben.

Hi there, I have a couple of pedals connected to the loops an in HX Effects. I was able to choose effects loop 2 for switch 5 but for some reason I can’t select effects loop 1 for switch 4. I can only choose send 1, the other switches all have effects assigned. Does anyone know what to check for or what I might’ve done wrong? Cheers, Ben

Thanks for the reply, very much appreciated. Is this a limitation with expression pedal jacks in general or just certain effects units like the HX Effects?
-
Hi There, Sorry if this isn't the place to post but I'm trying to understand out how to deliver expression pedal values to an HX Effects using two momentary switches on my guitar. The idea being that one button sends a low value and another sends a high value to create glitch-like effects instead of the smooth transition expression pedals deliver (thumb and forefinger hold pick for plucking, other fingers hit buttons like finger picked glitches). I've posted on a DIY electronics forum and it seems like having one pot per button would allow setting a value per button which sounds useful. However, if I understand things correctly, Helix expression pedal jacks aren't TRS. So does that mean I could only use one button? Or doesn't it mater because helix would just see whatever value is transmitted from whichever button is hit (in theory, you could have 8 buttons if you wanted)? I hope that makes sense, while I've built lots of guitar pedals from kits, I'm very green when it comes to electronics and don't really understand which wire connects to which lug to achieve any of this. Obviously this arrangement means another jack/cable coming from the guitar. Any suggestions or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. Cheers, Ben

In the Librarian, Switch to Bypass/Controller On the left, click the block you want to rename On the right, look for the 'Customise' section at the bottom of the options To the right next to the eraser icon, click the name and rename it Hit enter to save the name

Hi There, If I assign an effects loop to a switch, how do I rename it from FX Loop 1? The answers I've seen say to do this by clicking the switch in Command Centre but I don't see any rename options. To be clear, I've just assigned a block to an FX Loop and want to rename it to something useful. Is this possible? Cheers

With snapshots, you make a preset which uses the effects and external MIDI setup you'll need for a song, then use Snapshots to engage certain effects within the preset? The advantage being that all of the MIDI setup is done once for 4 sounds?
-
Yes, if it was called 'Variations' that would make a lot more sense. Thanks for that.
-
Yes, just use the expression pedal to control say the filter in one preset but modulation in another preset - is that possible? Are Control Center settings per preset or is it global to the HX Effects?
-
Not sure I fully understand sorry, you can assign a CC but moving the expression pedal won’t change the value sent to the pedal - is that right? When you say Snapshot, that also applies to a Preset too?
-
@rd2rk Thanks for your time, very much appreciated. Sorry for the confusion, I understand the difference between audio and MIDI, and that HX Effects isn't a librarian. I suspect the manual has confused me because Preset Mode doesn't seem to detail all of the possible settings which can be saved to a preset and suddenly stops on page 14. To clarify, can a preset recall the following with a single switch press? Enable multiple internal effects Enable/disable multiple effects loops Configure loop send/return levels Send PCs to select patches on external effects Setup expression pedal controller assignments (via MIDI to external effects) Cheers Ben

Thanks guys - very much appreciated but still confused sorry. @rd2rk I thought a patch was a sound made up of effect combinations that can be assigned to a switch in Stomp mode - like your own custom pedal. Or is that true for internal effects only? Or not even true for internal effects? Can you save Presets for external pedals and assign them to switches in Stomp mode or are external sounds only configured using Snapshots? And does that mean you have to configure the same external pedal settings from scratch each time you want to use one? I guess I'm confused because to me, external sounds are used identically to internal sounds. It's the verse, hit a switch, hear the sound - who cares what combination of internal effects, external loops and MIDI us used - right? Is there an advantage to working with external effects differently? Or am I not understanding the terminology. Or am I losing my mind here! @phil_m Agreed regarding MIDI on Meris pedals plus there's no volume control making them useless live without blowing ear drums and speakers. I was hoping loop volume could be controlled and saved per patch to counteract this but it seems loop and MIDI settings aren't unified or saved into a patch - is that right? Sorry for the simple questions and the confusion, the result seems very straight forward - save combinations of effects, loops and MIDI to create sounds, then assign sounds to footswitches.

Hi There, In my mind, controlling external MIDI effects is as simple as saving an external effects block into the HX library which configures the: Loop number(s) on/off (or no loop for MIDI only) MIDI Channel MIDI PC MIDI CCs Expression Pedal-to-MIDI assignments for controlling external effect parameters For example, you: Connect a Meris Enzo to loop 1 Create/save it's 16 presets as Enzo effects blocks into the HX Effects library Do the same for an Ottobit connected to loop 2 Then recall/use/combine the external effects like any other effect (limited to one per device) But after going through the manual, it seems loop and MIDI control isn't unified into a single effect or isn't saved/used like other effects. e.g. I can't have Enzo patch 1 appear as an effect in the library to be used in Stomp mode. Or I can't create an effect which combines Enzo and Ottobit patches and have that appear in the library to be recalled in Stomp mode. Is that right or am I confused by the manual/videos I've seen? I hope that makes sense and sorry if I'm missing something basic. Cheers Ben

This is just for my reference when testing a second-hand unit for the 2018 noise/artefacts fault... Start with a fresh empty patch In block one, add a loop with default settings and plug nothing into the loop one's send/return In block two, add the Teemah distortion with default settings Turn on the loop (not the distortion), it shouldn't generate noise/hiss. If it does, the unit has the fault

Thanks for that, I've just seen Helix Native and like the idea of having gat settings saved into the recording session (amongst many other features). A couple of questions if you don't mind... 1. If you buy Helix Native, are you limited to the effects on the HX Effects or do you get access to all Helix effects and sims? 2. Will HX Effects run setups created in Helix Native or is HX Effects always limited to the effects, cabs and sims it comes with? 3. If you're using DIN MIDI on your pedal board and Helix Native is connected to HX Effects via USB, can you pass CC messages via HX Effects to other MIDI pedals on the pedalboard in addition to controlling HX Effects? With the Boss ES-8, using the editor means disconnecting pedalboard MIDI while editing the ES-8, then reconnecting to test the changes with other pedals (which is frankly mind-numbing). Sorry for all the questions and thank you for taking the time to answer. Cheers Ben

Thanks so much for the reply, much appreciated. I’ve been reading the manual and it’s seems to have an easy to use interface - has that been your experience? Also, is there any serial no. or date info for units that have that noise fault? I’ll probably buy second-hand. And finally, the MIDI thru setting in the manual states: ‘When on, MIDI OUT also acts as a MIDI THRU; that is, it passes through any MIDI messages received at the MIDI IN jack‘. Does the word ‘also’ mean when on, it will merge MIDI thru data with output from the HX Effects into a single cable? Hope that all makes sense. Cheers Ben

Hi There, I have the Meris Enzo and Ottobit pedals which are fantastic in the studio but are useless live because they have no volume control - yes, this is silly/stupid IMHO. Will the HX Effects allow me to... 1. Connect the Enzo/Ottobit to send/return 1 + 2 (mono) and control their input/output volume per patch? 2. Create HX Effects patches which combine HX Effects with Enzo/Ottobit CC/Program changes to switch the Meris pedals out of bypass and select their internal patches? It’s seems like the above is possible but just thought I’d double check with experienced users first. Cheers Ben
