Helix Native 3.52 IR backup - Match IR filename to Slot number
DJ5D replied to DJ5D's topic in Helix Native
@silverhead thats helpful...this feature in HX Edit I did not notice. I'll have a look- I was able to restore quite a few IRs in Native from examining my Stomp presets, but there were many more experiments that i'll just have to start over with. Who knows they might end up superior. -
Helix Native 3.52 IR backup - Match IR filename to Slot number
DJ5D replied to DJ5D's topic in Helix Native
@datacommando SaschaFranck nailed my sentiments exactly. This is just lazy coding. Programmers aren't allowed to be lazy- that's strictly an end users job!! :) I would hope that a feature to collect all IR wavs into the backup file, or at least indicate filenames, should be part of a future update, but if a feature this basic and obvious has been left out of ALL the updates we have seen from Line6, it probably never will. So i shall abandon hope and get to renaming files..... -
Hi, I recently upgraded my Win10 system, hard drives mostly, and did a clean install of the OS and Helix Native 3.52. I was able to back up everything, all presets & all IRs into a folder, I did the bundle export as well, but there seems to be no feature to back up the IRs to the RIGHT SLOTS. Did I miss something? I can't find a clear answer to this anywhere except admonitions to write the IR list down, number your IRs, etc. Is there any method to reveal what IR name was in which slot? I still have my original drive (but i dont want to boot it because my OS customization is quite complex and it would be a real hassle) Thanks!

Are you talking about the software mouse cursor? I haven't noticed any issue there. If you are talking about the hardware knobs tho- I simply cannot believe that anyone would prefer twisting a knob 10 times instead of just once. I've found this to be one of my favorite update features. That being said, choice over fine/coarse knob speed should always be given to the user.

It's not your list, but I use a Mackie Thump 15A as my "FRFR". You could also get a 12" version if you don't need the extra "thump". The amp is built in, it cranks, has decent sound, is made to sit horizontally as a stage monitor, and its surprisingly light. I was going to get a fancy FRFR but then realized that they are, for the most part, overpriced, no better than PAs, and you pay for redundant features (like IRs) So it doesn't HAVE to be a Mackie, I personally think they are great, but any decent full range PA will meet all of your requirements. The bottom line: Go to a store, compare, and trust your ears, and don't be afraid to buy used or factory refurbs either to save cash.

Helix 3.50 DSP Allocations by Ben Vesco - just published!
DJ5D replied to jmotherwell's topic in Helix
OK here is the response I got from support on this. It doesnt explain it from the technical side, but in terms of practicality it does: "Hi, here's the official word: For Helix Floor, Rack, LT, and Native, it’s two new cabs per path (so 4 total). However, once you add two, you can still access the older Hybrid cabs. For HX Stomp and Stomp XL, it’s two new cabs total, but you can still add older Hybrid cabs. (A new dual cab counts as two) Basically, instead of the logic paying attention to the total number of cabs, it pays attention to the total number of cabs of each type. Amps follow the same logic—two per path." Since my brain had been initially conditioned by the Stomp, I misunderstood how paths worked in Helix Native, now I can easily do what I wanted, which was to compare new duals to IRs in the same patch. -

@jmotherwell It would be neat if Ben were also able to include memory allocation as well as DSP, that would help give what may be the final answer to this question. -

Nothing is explained there. It's not that they are just "still limited to one instance per path"- that would imply that its the same as it always has been. Its not. We have always been able to use a legacy dual cab + IR on an A/B path, that's the way it was and still is, but you cannot use a NEW dual cab + IR in this manner. Try making a simple patch with just an amp and a new dual on path A. Then try to put an IR on path B. It does not work. In Helix Native using Floor compatibility mode, it doesn't work there either, so this impacts everyone, Floor and Stomp users alike. Does this make sense? I'm currently talking to support to see if this is an oversight of some kind to be fixed in a future update, or if the new duals simply use too much memory and it's never going to be possible. -

it still disappoints and makes me head scratch, as to why with all the DSP savings, we cant have a new dual cab and an IR simultaneously. if it was all just DSP then theoretically it should work. -
@SaschaFranck You know, Sascha, you make a great point. I just have a dream to recreate my favorite go-to IR with the new Helix cab options, for sharing, maybe for the sheer challenge of it. I've come pretty close, but can't quite nail it 100%......yet. ill be happy with a good solid 90.

@soundog Thanks for the advice! If you wouldn't mind sharing a patch that you feel is a really good example that i can study, I'd appreciate that. Maybe a snapshot of the original Pro EQ match too, so I can see what you did? And you you using multiple para EQs? If you are on Win10 one of my fave features is the "Shift + Win + S" to grab little shots off areas of the screen. Like this:
-
Yup im getting that feeling. No way to really do it without using an IR, and thus defeats sharing easily.
-
Has anyone here ever used Match EQ results (from Ozone, Fab, etc) to make EQ settings in Helix? I'm not talking about making IRs here, just using the data from Match EQ to create EQ settings in the Helix that are close enough to be usable. Is it a waste of time trying to do this, or has anyone gotten decent results? And if you did, how did you go about it?

@Schmalle Hey Schmalle, great work! Pretty darn close for the Powerslave preset! I didn't see your post for a couple of weeks but I just tried it and the character is definitely in the ballpark. i hadn't tried the Moons yet. Thanks!

If you really want to use the looper in a functional sort of way you reeeally need a midi controller pedal. Personally, the looper was useless to me, until I connected an FCB1010 midi controller- where I could have dedicated, separate foot switches for rec/play/undo/stop Getting that controller changed everything. I could finally USE the looper easily.

That's interesting. When I swapped yours into my presets it was kinda dark, but seemed like a good all-around IR. Probably amp settings differences (I tried it on a metal patch I was working on but didnt tweak the amps or fx yet) I like the Marshall 3_01 off axis for 80s metal tones because to my ears it has multidimensional sound. We ought to swap presets- I haven't really had a chance to swap with someone and get feedback on how they sound on different systems. Can you shoot me a preset you created with your IR? Here's one I've been tweaking that uses the Marshall IR - I used Dimarzio Humbuckers, sounds good with Fishman Actives too (with pad set to on). For passives global settings pad should be off and In-Z set to auto, gate is set to -40db. If you are on computer gain staging is at around -18db on the mixer. Going for the Iron Maiden "2 minutes to midnight" rhythm sound here, reverb only for rhythm and all FX on for leads. You may need to tweak EQ/hi cut depending on your system, I have Event 20/20 full-range monitors and Mackie Thump 15s for getting the live PA feel. Helix preset: Powerslave.hlx IR below: + 1 off axis 3_01.wav Feedback appreciated from anyone. Tweaks to the patch as well! Note: I reuploaded the Helix patch because the first had the patch on the wrong A/B setting.
-
Are these files I have uploaded above having the same issue?
-
I had to rename the files to .wav but they worked. for some reason they had a long alphanumeric after the filename. I A/B'd them on some cabs and my marshall IR above. @SaschaFranck what do you think of the Marshall off axis I put above, compared to yours? If you slip it into an existing patch of yours using the gen01, tell me what you think the difference is. Also what kind of sounds are you going for with those IRs?
-
Definitely get custom IRs. The problem is you will likely have to sort thru thousands. I found the original cabs in Helix to be quite dull in comparison to a good quality IR, so I never used them much. While I had hoped the update would really change that, well it hasn't, in my opinion. Believe me, I wish it were not the case- I've been tweaking the living daylights out of the new cabs in 3.50, but they still don't compare to the best custom IRs out there. A LOT more goes into a quality IR than just speakers and mic positions. Here's a couple great free ones, the first is a Marshall cab good for ac/dc, metal, etc. + 1 off axis 3_01.wav The second is essential to creating a truly decent Master of Puppets era sound. puppet_IR.wav Enjoy, and look up some tutorials on how to use them properly if needed.

and yes, the tone chasing is sometimes futile, but ive got zeppelin, metallica, sabbath, pink floyd, eagles dialed in....and i learn a LOT when i tone-chase. So its all good.
-
Yeah, ive been among the bitterly disappointed, lol. I know that gain staging, pickups, speakers have a lot do with how presets sound, sometimes i can tweak and get it good other times im like, this isnt even in the ballpark?? So funny you mentioned Craig Anderton, i'm deep into that about now- this tab was open on my desktop, an article he wrote. https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/double-best-line-6-helix-tone/
-
Yup, been playing with the hi-cuts etc....and I did give that Tilt block a whirl and it seems to be a V shaped eq curve? It's starting to look like there is a LOT more to IRs than than just cab and mics. For example, I was never able to properly dupe the Metallica "Master of Puppets" sound for years (very frustrating!) until I got the right IR. I'm going for Iron Maiden's "2 Minutes to Midnight" tone, I've come very, very close with that IR above, but dammit, I want to make one with stock hardware if I can.
-
yes thats exactly what ive been doing here. I've noticed that the new duals seem to be a bit "fizzy" on the high end and using high pass filters only does so much. They seem to have a different sort of character to them-especially contrasted with an IR of the same cab. Do you consider yourself to be expert level at dialing in cab sounds? I feel like there is some secret in the sauce that i'm missing in technique. Here are the Stomp files if you, or anyone else, wants to compare, IR included. For this patch I'm using passive DiMarzio bridge humbuckers. + 1 off axis 3_01.wav IronMaidenIR3_01.hlx IronMaidenT75.hlx

I've been trying to dupe an IR with the new dual cabs and not having much luck. My favorite go to IR is a freebie that i have seen in multiple places for download, but i am not sure what the name means, and i'd like to be able to create an identical-sounding stock cab so i can share the presets. need some help tho. Its from http://www.grebz.com/simulator_impulses.php#free_impulses The cab is a Marshall 1960A T75 SM57, the filename for my fave is "+ 1 off axis 3_01" I interpret it to mean cap edge, off axis, 3 inches away but this doesnt get me close, and i don't understand the 01 in the 3_01 part. Anyone know for sure? Below is a pic of the other files included for context:

The original Helix hardware came out in 2015- and the Sharc processors that power it go back to 2012 or earlier- that's 10 years ago, an ETERNITY in terms of computer processing capability. This is why its rare and much appreciated to see the updates. They are really working some miracles at Line6. :)
