One of the things I learned early on when recording bass was that there's certain frequencies that I needed to do real sharp cuts to make the bass part not suddenly go "boom! look at me! I'm a bass note!"
For me it usually worked to take an EQ in post and just make a super sharp Q cut right at about 133hz. That seemed to be the worst culprit. There's other spots (don't remember the frequencies off the top of my head) that you can do to further level it out, but for whatever reason 133hz seems to be the big one. Just do a super sharp cut there, and it might just solve the whole problem, if what's happening to you is what was happening to me.
