Sustain depends mainly on factors like your guitar wood, body, guitar action (that it doesn't buzz to other frets when paying the notes), etc , etc. Anyway the effect that will help you do that is the compressor effect. The compressor makes the low volumes of your guitar (or whatever you are connecting) higher and will also make the higher volumes lower so you will get a more balanced playing and a little more sustain. If your guitar happens to make too much buzzing sound, the compressor can make it louder (specially if using distortion) so you may wanna use the noise gate also to block that buzz.
