How do I use POD HD500x to enhance my amp's distortion? (I don't want amp emulation)

Hello Everyone.

I want to use my POD HD 500x to enhance my amp head's distortion, which I really love, and create different patches using both channels, for boosted sound, more/less reverb, add delay, etc, as my setlist requires and to maintain sound consistency. I solved the channel switching problem with an RJM Mini Gizmo midi footswitch, but I just can't figure out how to use the amp's own distortion to make my basic sound, and build from there. I hope I'm making sense here, I'm fairly new to the POD HD500. Any orientation and/or tutorials would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
