thenewbie
Has anyone recording their external amp into Helix, using the Helix as digital effects, IR, and audio interface? What I'm doing is using the 4 cable method to play live, but then I'm routing the amps speaker out (using load box) back into a parallel path into my Helix return 3. So what I want to do, is record this complete signal chain back into my helix, into USB 1/2. But the problem is, the headphone can only be assigned to multi or XLR. So that means, if I assign it to multi, I'll also be hearing the pre-amp 4 cable signal chain. I only want to hear the final power amp output, not just the pre-amp's (send/return 1/2) signal. And if I assign headphones to XLR, I can't record/send the parallel path to USB, since I just assigned the parallel paths output to XLR. So if I can assign my headphone to monitor any output (E.g usb 1/2) then I can use the parallel path to just monitor/record the amps final output (e.g. into return 3) into my computers USB 1/2. Has anyone setup their helix to record their external amp? I saw a very similar video of Pete Thorn using his Helix rack to record his external amp using helix for the IR and digital effects. But I didn't see his signal path, and I don't know if he monitored and recording only using the Helix. He might have recording and monitored this using an external interface. --Phil
SymphonicDischord
Here is what I would try but disclaimer, I have no experience with the Helix as an audio interface or USB routings. Path 1: Guitar input > pre amp FX (drives, etc.) > FX loop 1 (Helix send 1 to amp input, amp FX send to Helix return 1) > post amp FX (delays, etc.) > Path 1 output set as Helix send 2 (which will be fed to your amp's FX return. Path 2: Input set to return 3 (being fed by your amp's load box) > Cab IRs > post cab FX (reverbs, etc.) > Path 2 output set to XLR. I believe with this signal chain you should be able to record your amp with IRs and monitor the full sound as opposed to a mix of both. Hopefully this works out for you. thenewbie
Hi SymphonicDischord, Thank you for the quick response and brainstorm. This is exactly the paths I have setup. However, the second path goes out to XLR, not out to USB into computer, so I can't record using Helix as the interface. If Helix can assign my Headphones to monitor specific USB outputs, I would be all set. But I think that's a limitation to the current global settings. Does anyone else have success with a setup to record their external AMP output into Helix into USB, while monitoring with headphones? --Philipe
jbuhajla
What was mentioned above is exactly what you want to do in terms of signal path. When you are recording to your DAW via USB, you will be listening on headphones on the Helix monitoring USB in 1/2 from the DAW. Mute your guitar track on your DAW while you are recording so you don't have any latency. So you are listening to all the other tracks coming back on USB in 1/2 from your DAW, and also listening to your guitar going OUT on USB out 1/2 to the DAW. So when you have headphones on Multi, you are listening to your guitar on USB OUT 1/2 going to your DAW as well as all your other tracks coming from your DAW on USB IN 1/2. Just be sure to mute your guitar track on your DAW.
