aguilarra91
Hello. I'm in need of some advise towards getting the 60 or 100 version of the Catalyst. As far as I know (I might be wrong), there is no much difference in volume between the 60 watt and the 100 watt version but 3dBs (please correct me if I'm wrong). My plan is to use the amp mostly as a pedal platform for external analog and digital pedals I already own and like. Most of the time I tend to play at home so I could switch to the 1/2 watt in either versions and not bother my wife or neighbours and still practice happily, but once a week I also go and jam with some pals in the studio and we usually crank the volume a bit cause LOUD drummer. Probably going to start playing some small gigs (<100 people) and I'm looking for some advise as to which one do you think might deliver it's best in all 3 situations. Do you think the 60 watt version could get the tone quality compromised in the jam/small gigging situations if cranked, or do you think the 100 watt version would be TOO much even reducing it to 1/2 watts at home practicing which is where I would mostly play? Besides, can I get a better tone response from the amp voicings from the 100 watt version or from the 60 watt version at high and low volumes or is it really the same in both? Not having in mind getting the 200 watt one. Thank you very much for the support!
rd2rk
The 100 watt version will not be "too much". 1/2 watt is 1/2 watt. If I dime my Cat 100 at 1/2 watt I'll be evicted from my apartment. The Cat60 would be the same. The 60 watt version COULD be not enough in a LIVE band setting. HOWEVER... 60 watts is frelling LOUD. If your drummer is drowning you out, don't worry about getting the 100 watt version, you'll be deaf soon. Fire the drummer. Most clubs these days won't let you get that loud. Most sound techs will tell you to turn down. If FOH needs more volume they'd prefer to take your DI to the board rather than let you kill the patrons in front of the stage with more stage volume. The three main reasons to get the Cat100 vs the Cat60 are: The Cat100's cab is bigger. At moderate volume levels it might seem to sound fuller, especially in the low frequencies. The Cat100 has 5pin MIDI DIN. You don't think you need it now, but you'd be surprised how many people have later regretted not having it. I have a Helix, and the integration is awesome. While the Cat60 has MIDI over USB, it requires a computer or Host device in between. More to carry, more failure points, more setup/teardown time. The cost difference between the CAT100 vs the Cat60 + Host is negligible. KISS! If you practice with headphones, the AUX IN/HP OUT are stereo (the amp itself is not). My advice - get the Cat100. At the current sale price it's a no-brainer! 1
