What is the "Direct Output" in the Global I/O settings?

I'm trying to get my Helix connected to my system which is admittedly over complicated and ridiculous, but I'm trying to find a way to have a global dry send on one of the physical outputs and under SPDIF and USB 1/2 there is an option for "Direct Output".  It is dead when selected no matter what I try to send into the device.

I reserve the right to be stupid.

The only dry output I’m aware of is the assignable ReAmp Source Out that is available over the USB 7 and 8 channels. (See Global Settings) These are provided to allow you to record a dry output tapped directly from the assigned physical input (no processing applied other than the required A/D conversion) into your DAW for plugin or reamping purposes.

The Direct Output in Global Settings for the USB 1/2 and S/PDIF allows you to select these outputs in the Output block of a preset, but they output the processed, not dry, signal.

Otherwise you can get an almost dry signal from a physical output by creating an empty path in a preset and selecting the desired physical output in the Output block of that path. This involves both an initial A/D and a final D/A conversion.

I understand what you are saying and thanks for the response.  I am using USB 7/8 to feed a VST instrument and I want to bring that back into the Helix Stadium as a global input on USB 1/2.  It's there....I can see it on the Matrix and I'd like to mix that into a physical output of the Helix.  That's why I thought that being able to route "Direct Output" to one of the outputs would work, but it's clearly not.  I can route the VST into USB 3/4 and then add I/O path to the output, but I'm lazy and I didn't want to have to do that to every patch.

Really I just wanted to see if there was a smart/easy/lazy way to do this before I start editing patches.  I can see the signal in the matrix as if it is mocking me and I can't get to it.  I guess that you are saying that it is only to be used as the return for re-amping.

EDIT:  Actually USB 1/2 isn't in the main input either as a selection.  I'm really confused as to what it is there for because you can't route it anywhere.

USB Input 1/2 is reserved to receive the output of your computer (e.g. your DAW). It comes into the Stadium device as an Input that is shown in the Matrix so that you can balance , pan, mute/solo it to mix with the other outputs from various sources. It does not appear as a selection in the Input block because it is reserved.

I think that there is a bug with the firmware or the global menu options are misleading.  I should have clarified that I'm using SPDIF for monitoring until the D10 comes out and I can use AES.  Anyway, there is a menu option to select which Matrix is output to SPDIF and you can select 1/4 or headphones or even Direct...yeah, none of that actually works.  You get the main signal with the AUX/RET on 3/4 mixed in and that's it.  I didn't figure it out until I actually hooked up some headphones to the phone output and could hear my other device.

Open a support ticket to report the bug.
