Zantozzzz
I have a Catalyst 100 and play mostly metal. I am told having a closed back is preferred for metal amps. Would it be okay if I used a piece of plywood to close the back of the amp? Also, would it be worth upgrading the speaker to a Celestion V30 as long as it has the same Ohms and Watts? rd2rk
Closed back "metal" combos generally have the speaker section sealed and ported, tuned (interior dimensions/port size) for the specific speaker that they are designed to be used with, with the amp head in its own section. You can try it, of course, but do it in such a way as to not heavily mod the existing cab. You might want to sell it later. FWIW - I don't think it would be worth the effort. I've read on various forums where people have gone on a speaker swapping journey, only to put the original speaker back in. L6 tested many speakers (per the head of the design team) and designed a special speaker that sounded best with all the included amp models. A compromise, at best, but the speaker is not in there because it was the cheapest available. Also, Good Luck finding a 4ohm Celestion V30. Since it's a Class D amp (not tube) an 8ohm would probably work, but it'll cut your output significantly. If you need a hammer, a Leatherman ain't gonna get it. Make the best of what you've got and save up for the right tool for the job. IMO. YMMV, etc.
