Nick_S
It's been probably a year since I last looked at the setup of my Variax 300. I thought I had sorted out connection via the Variax USB Interface when I got my Windows 11 laptop, but neither Line 6 Central nor Line 6 Monkey can find it. Looking at Windows Device Manager there's a warning triangle against the interface and the summary status says "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)". Driver details says the driver is signed by Line 6. Any assistance gratefully received...
Nick_S Posted yesterday at 02:09 PM Author Share Posted yesterday at 02:09 PM So it seems the issue is that Windows 11 tightened up its checking of driver digital signatures and the Line 6 Windows driver for the Variax USB Interface does not meet the new (since April 2026?) more stringent requirements. As there's little chance that the driver's signature will be updated by Yamaha/Line 6 there are two options if you need to use the Variax USB interface. 1. Keep a Windows 10 device for this purpose. 2. Temporarily disable driver signature checking through the Windows Recovery menu. See this Post on disabling driver checking on vguitarforums. This only lasts until the next reboot. As I only want to edit and upload/download tones and I don't expect to need to install firmware I've just knocked up a little power/MIDI box to use with a USB MIDI interface. Workbench seems happy with that.
Nick_S
Scratch that. Workbench is working poorly over MIDI - it could be one of several issues with Windows MIDI Services that should be fixed in a late November update. Sometimes it can see the Variax 300, sometimes not. It often does not shut down cleanly, maybe leaving an instance of Java running that has to be killed through Task Manager.
