To this end, what is the 'best' or 'preferred' way to signal if you are using IRs? amp+cab, amp/cab combo, or just amp+IR versus amp+cab combo AND IR? Also a newbie, but am currently using amp/cab combo and IR immediately after that?

So a small network switch wouldn't solve this? How about a hub, which sends everything everywhere undiscriminantly?
