  1. Any guide on how to do that? I'm usually pretty risk-averse. Bought it used so no warranty. I tried the TRS cable, nothing happened. I bought a 3 foot Monoprice TRS cable. Do I need to leave the cable in a minimum amount of time before the electronics "recognizes" it?
  2. So I've charged the battery and plugged in using the regular input jack. I have the VDI cable but nothing to use it on. The battery shows a full charge, all four lights. Yet when I press in on either the modeling knob or the tuning knob, nothing happens. No light, etc. I can only use the magnetic pickups. The jack is a bit problematic. It's a bit difficult to insert/take out the plug. I really hope it's not that. It's been suggested to: "Use a guitar cable with TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) plugs and not a TS plug." I've checked and my only cables are TS. TRS cables didn't occur to me. I hope the lack of a TRS cable is the only reason. I wonder if that's also the for the difficult jack? I think there may be TS to TRS adapters, would that be sufficient? I suppose I'd need just one adapter to fit the jack, the other end of the cable not being relevant. Or do I just need to order a new TRS cable?
  3. I assume the 89F has the kind of Floating tremelo that can bend the pitch up? How's the palm muting work with that? The only experience I had with that sort of tremelo was on a cheaper guitar, even palm muting seemed to change the pitch a bit.
  4. So I know the Helix $1600ish Helix has special functions with the Variax. Among other things, it can power the Variax guitar. What about the HX units? Can any of them do that? I know they're based on the Helix, but obviously stripped down for budget reasons. I'm curious if the HX series interacts with a Variax in any special way, or is it similar to using any other Line 6 effects products?
  5. So how big of a difference do you think it would make if the electronics from a James Tyler 89 fixed bridge guitar were in a Les Paul style(either double or single cutaway)? You would probably notice that, but how much would Nate Nobody notice? Would it be easy enough to adjust with EQ?

1- Depends on their hearing and how trained they are at hearing. Big difference for some, barely noticeable for others. Me,... I'd catch it right off.

2- EQ is useful, but would take you only so far.

Many factors, and they all play a role. Because it's an instrument, it there wuill be an affect on the sound from instrument to instrument, for a board programmed for something else. If it were a "virtual instrument" in a box or computer, like they do at CCRMA at Stanford, then that would be different,... no acoustics to deal with.

In a Variax, the program has to acoustically match the guitar it is in, as that is part of the modeling process. So there is no one-size-fits-all in this. Part of the reason we don't do retro-fit kits for generic guitars,... wouldn't work well.

      Thank you for your answers.

I'm curious how the switch from an '89 fixed bridge Variax to an LP style would possibly change the sound. Would it be too tinny? More(or less) bassy? Or are there too many variables with the transplant body to try a guess?

  6. I've seen discussion here that dropping the electronics of a Variax into a different body will change the sound. Psarkissian mentioned this. This sounds reasonable. I'm curious how much though? Is it the shape? The kind of wood etc? Would a regular person perceive it? Would it be easy to EQ the tone back into shape? Or is it beyond the ability of EQ to correct it? I was surprised I hadn't seen very many transplant projects, now it makes more sense. What would someone need to expect or listen for?
