Is this possible??? - Spare speakers

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've acquired four different sets of old bookshelf/hifi style speakers - all varying in size - ALL passive (photos only for size examples)

The biggest being about this size: http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/d/l225...nx-EIUXmAw.jpg

And the smallest being about this size:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wanted to use these four sets of speakers on my desk as a 'second' set of reference speakers to check my mixes on - to save me having to bounce my mixes to do a thousand car checks, etc.

My main setup - Connected to my PC is a Line 6 UX2 which functions as my interface and soundcard - which feeds my main monitors (equator D5's).

I was looking to have a setup where i can unplug the Equators (my main monitors) from my UX2 interface and (temporarily, when needed) feed the ux2 to a small amplifier, which will run through a speaker switcher - connected to the four sets of speakers i've acquired.

This is the amp i was looking at:

And this is the speaker switcher:

Preferably I dont want to spend a fortune - as I simply thought it would be a good use for the unused speakers lying around. I'm not too concerned about the amp or the switcher coloring/affecting the sound - as i will just be referencing/A-B'ing with commercial mixes. Just looking for a different perspective than from my main monitors every now and then.

Not sure if this is practical, possible, safe.. Any help, info or advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance,

Aaron

Ive drawn and uploaded a diagram which hopefully will make it easier.

Another idea - would it be possible to connect from the Headphone out of the ux2 into the 3.5 input of the amp? with a cable like this:

Thanks a lot :)

Yes, this is all doable, however be careful of overdriving the input section of the amp using the headphone output of the UX2 (keep the volume level down). You coudl also put a 2-way adapter on the 1/4" monitor output of the UX2 - one side to your Equators and the other to the power amp.

Note that if you have acoustic treatment in your mixing room, the Equators will give you the best translatable sound anyway, and checking on other speakers should become unnecessary.

Thanks Mike - the headphone out is looking like the best option for my setup now - as i've got another independent volume control over the headphone out.

I'll be using the Equators 95% of the time.. Just A/Bing my mix with commercial releases along the way on the second set of speakers to make sure i'm on the right track in terms of levels and EQ.

Thank you for your advice, extremely helpful :)
