Using Torpedo CAB for tone matching with POD HD500x

Gear Head: you can find mog files on the internet which are like stem files that have all the isolated instrument tracks of some well known songs. I think a lot of them were ripped from games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

Just Startin': I Use full Pod patches Amp - Cab - Mic and FX, get you POD patch as close as possible to the track you're trying to emulate. The most important thing here is to get the FX right and match the gain and gain type (preamp gain vs Power section gain).

Then use Ozone to make a tone match EQ, use any of the free convolution plugins to make that tone match into an IR. Load IR into Topredao CAB. There are lots of tutorials of this on youtube

I run the Torpedo CAB in the FX Loop (This way I can use the FX return to adjust the level coming back from the CAB, and it also means all the POD output options such as L6Link etc are still usable.

Still experimenting with the process and signal chain and I'll keep you updated. But I think it's a cool resource for guys who play in Tribute bands and cover bands who want closer to the original artist sound

A couple of questions. Do you run the POD in studio/direct mode or combo or stack mode when recording the sample to be tone matched? Do you keep it in the  same  setting then when the IR is running through the Torpedo? I've learned a lot through seeing this post and trying to emulate it, and for that I thank you. But I've only achieved one good tone matched IR by using the following method (couldn't get any different methods to sound half decent yet).

  • Recorded tone using stack mode, full amp, no cab and mic.

(I understand you run it with cab and mic enabled, but my attempts using those alongside the pre amp has not worked yet. The way I see it is EQ matching it adds what is to be the cabinet sound, but I could be wrong?)

  • EQ Matched tone with Ozone 5 and track I'm trying to emulate.
  • - Ran sweep generated through Voxengo Deconvolver, through Ozone 5 EQ curve, making sure it didn't clip.

(Same settings as DAW project was used in generating the sweep).

  •  Ran exported sweep from DAW with added EQ curve filtered, with original sweep in Voxengo Deconvolver.
  • Used that exported file with POD in stack mode, full amp, no cab and mic, and Torpedo wall of sound as cab simulation in DAW.
  • All was done in mono.

Any further advice or approach would be greatly appreciated!

I use the pod in full per power amp mode with speaker emulation on, this helps me to get the basic distortion close to the original.

I then turn off cab before recording my version, I've only just discovered that this seems to work better. Then after the IR is made and loaded into the Torpedo, it is applied in the signal chain after the Pod using the exact setting that were recorded in: Studio direct with speaker set to no cab.

Make sure EQ resolution in Ozone is set to highest (3hz)

I sometimes put my IR into Reaverb (free convolution plugin in Reaper) to test my recording. You'll know that your on the right track if bypassing Ozone and running the IR in Reaverb sounds identical.

I'm beginning to notice that my approach works great for crunch, break up and djent sounds, but it is far far harder to achieve good results on clean sounds. My big goal at the moment is to try and use this set up to get piezo style acoustic sounds. I think it's possible but I'm not there yet

I put a full detailed step by step on this forum, maybe you can spot something here that you might have missed
