POD HD unplayable hum when connected to PC

I'm using a POD HD desktop with a Line 6 Spider Valve 112. When my POD HD is connected to my laptop via usb and connected to the amp it sounds horrible. There is a very loud hum and the tone is somewhat distorted as well making it completely unplayable. I have the POD HD connected to the POWER IN jack on the back of the amp and I also tried plugging it into the regular guitar in jack which makes it way worse. The POD sounds find when not connected to the computer but the second the USB cable goes anywhere near my computers usb port the humming starts.  I've tried plugging the pod and computer, into a different outlets, different instrument and usb cables but they have no effect. Any ideas on what might be causing the problem?

just trying to help - not sure how relevant this is to your problem but...

these can be very difficult issues to track down.  on more than one occasion - breaking my entire system apart and rewiring being careful to separate power from audio cable, tried plugging computer into different outlets - and same outlets(better for me)... computer on separate power conditioner from other gear... monitor on and off that power conditioner... etc.

many things mentioned above did solve noise issues... but still heard what I would call 'static' in the background.  louder on some sounds than others.

The SOLUTION for me was energy saving settings on my computer.  There was a setting in my bios that once I changed it - solved the static computer noise issue altogether.  This would not be the same setting on all motherboards so my specific info isn't important: I would suggest that anyone hearing this static - sputtering computer noise in the background investigate their specific motherboard bios settings.

sweet relief when the (admittedly faint) noise was gone. as I understand, the setting was causing my power supply (computer) to draw more/less power in spurts and this was making it's way (despite power conditioners, despite ALL balanced cable even when it was an unbal path) into my audio.

hope this helps someone!
