LINK2U
Hi everyone, Anyone any idea whether the Helix is usable as a multi FX for a DJ ? Meaning that the (mono) guitar in will not be used but only the send returns (two (L/R) as stereo). Did someone already try this idea / or mentioned in another post / video ? Just a stereo IN from any source (ipad, mix panel, ...) resulting in sound on speakers :-) Thanks for posting a reply, or any info on (non) usability. All the best, Pieter. PeterHamm
What kind of FX? I would think the interface would frustrate a DJ. I have no idea what kind of stuff they'd use.
jbuhajla
I am not a DJ, but I use USB 3/4 as an input and put effects on that input, then output to XLR. I have some pads in MP3 format that I play on Path 1A with some delay and reverb on it. You can use the returns in the same fashion.
yossarian1156
As a former DJ, I'd say yes it will absolutely work and no you shouldn't do it. The types of effects and manner of control really doesn't fit a dj application all that well. You could certainly get it to work and with 3 expression pedals get the type of control you wanted. Some of the effects would be cool. But for the price, and compromises you'd make on effects, control, and workflow, it wouldn't make any sense. Go get a Pioneer RMX-1000 or a Kaoss Pad for a lot less money.
Digital_Igloo
There are a few DJs using Helix Rack, but at least two of them are using MIDI knob boxes to control everything in real time. Fortunately, Helix makes it easy to map parameters to MIDI knobs: Press and hold the parameter knob you want to control. This jumps Helix to the Controller Assign page for that parameter. Press Knob 6 (Learn Controller) and then move the desired knob on your MIDI controller. OPTIONAL: Turn Knobs 4 (Min Value) and 5 (Max Value) to set the range controlled by the knob; set them opposite of one another for reverse control. Press HOME when finished. Up to 64 parameters can be controlled this way.

But found it to be limiting in the sound manipulation, presets and that is it ... Only software had a somewhat wider selection (like traktor) on FX, but not that in to updating software (and peripherals) the whole time :-) , and worried about fails on live performance - so I prefer stand-alone units. So in the meanwhile found one Helix (at a great discount) and started my learning curve, and indeed not that easy if your used to turning knobs and sliders as a DJ. However, found some great advantages too, most of my music is 4/4, exp pedals can tune more parameters (at once), and in a limited range (not the full extension), with 2 send/returns (stereo). So maybe if I need more granularity, I 'd look into the combo with MIDI. Thanks for you honest feedback, and today I am still in the happy rush of a new purchase. But the freedom on the effects is widening the horizon on creativity. Thanks for shedding some light and shortening the learning curve :-)
