JTV-89F variax and Spider Valve Mk II 212

Looking for some quick advice please.   I have a Spider Valve Mk II 212 with the FBV Shortboard MkII pedal board.   I'm thinking of purchasing a JTV 89F variax but want to check if this guitar compatible for use with this 'old' amp?  I've tried to search about to see how the Variax works - it is new to me -  but can't find anything with clear use or explanation.  Does the guitar just plug straight into the guitar 1/4" jack input on the amp?  and do the guitar sounds/tunings etc run from the guitar itself?

 

Can I get the best out of the JTV89F with this set-up?  Or do i need to change my amp or FBV shortboard or something?

 

What are the recommendations?

Yes, all the modeling is in the guitar itself, and you can run into any amp on earth with a 1/4" cable...BUT, you're stuck relying on the battery to power the guitar, and without using a VDI connection to a compatible L6 product, you have to control everything manually from the Variax, such as changing models, tunings, etc. Using a compatible amp modeler like Helix or POD HD allows all of that to be done with the click of a footswitch. Not sure if the Spider is equipped to do that or not.

 

Also, if you intend to use the acoustic models in the Variax, some sort of FRFR speaker(s) is a MUST. The limited frequency response of a traditional guitar speaker cabinet or combo amp, is simply not capable of producing convincing acoustic tones. It'll just end up sounding like a clean electric.
