HX Effects - control Whammy via MIDI

Got the new HX Effects, which I am loving, no more Amp Modelling effects !! (which are ok in studio usage, but for performing live, I like to just use guitar effects..).

Anyway, I also have a whammy pedal which allows control changes via MIDI, on reading the Pilots Guide (and come on Line 6, why couldn't you have offered a printed option, not a bloody PDF !!); its states that CC messages can be sent, but it seems to be global.

I want in one SET, or SNAPSHOT, to have the ability to use say the shallow detune, whilst playing rhythm etc, but once I play lead guitar - with a distortion, want the distortion pedal (be that any pedal of the 6 available),  to automatically send the Whammy a control change to alter its setting to Whammy 2nd (toe down)... and then return it back to the shallow detune to continue to play rhythm.

Any guidance would be helpful... yes there is a whammy effect inside the HX Effects, but I like the additional control, and don't really want to stop/ bend down / twiddle the control and then press the required Pedal on the HX, I want it to do some of the work for me.

Any help or an example preset etc would be useful.

By default, most midi devices will "send" and "receive" on all midi channels (aka: omni mode) so things just work when they are opened. However, it is always best to setup discreet midi channels for each device.... and set GLOBAL to a discreet channel as well (I always set all of my devices GLOBAL in/out to channel 16... then use channels 1 - 15 for everything else ). Once you have done that cross talk between devices and unexpected behavior becomes a thing of the past.

I don't have the pedal you have, so I can't give a step by step on setting it up... but I will try to point you in the right direction.

  • To start... I would set the Whammy to communicate on one particular channel. Then whenever you want the HX Effects to talk to the Whammy... you will set the HX controller to communicate on that channel.
  • Your HX Effects solutions should be in the "Command Center". You should be able to setup an "Instant" message that occurs when you change a patch or snapshot... or you should be able to setup a "stomp foot switch" to do what you need.

If you are new to using MIDI it takes a bit to wrap your head around it... but it's really powerful once you figure it out.
