jrioux
I've recently purchased an HD 500--it's the first time I've worked with such a unit. I have managed to change patches using MIDI via an iPad program, but would very much like to learn whether I can 'remotely' change output settings on the POD, too. For some of my patches, I'd like to route the output to my amp, for others, I'd like to go directly to the PA system. From what I understand, however, that's optimally done in conjunction with a change in the output settings (from "Stack / Power Amp" to "Studio / Direct", for example). Of course, I could do that manually, but, wanting the best of both worlds (direct to PA and through my amp), I'd like to find a way to do that which wouldn't take so much time. hurghanico
You can not change the device output setting remotely by MIDI.. But there is a solution to get what you need, ie you can put the FX LOOP block at the end of those patches of which the signal should go directly to the PA, doing so their signal will be deviated toward the (stereo capable) SEND output on the rear panel instead of going through the standard outputs. (Eventually, if you wish, you can then turn off the FX LOOP block remotely via MIDI and therefore let the signal go through the standard outputs). An other option would be to take advantage of the stereo separation of the LEFT and RIGHT channels, by hard panning all the patches to the LEFT or the RIGHT depending on which direction they should go, and connecting just one mono cable to each different output target, doing so obviously all the signals can be only mono. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips
jrioux
Thanks, hurghanico. I have no problem sending the signal to separate outputs -- I'm sending the amp out to the PA anyway (I've miced the amp) -- it's just that I've heard outputting a signal using the 'wrong' output mode produces undesirable results. As to the POD's SEND, I'm using the 4-cable method with the amp already. So, I guess I want it all. :-) I want to use the POD and its modeling capabilities separately from my amp, and my amp separately from the POD, or a mix (via 4-cable), all remotely. Whatever you would like to do there is no way to change the device output mode remotely by MIDI.. Previously I thought that you had some acoustic patches of which the signal should better go directly to the PA and some electric patches (presumably without power-amp and cab/mic models enabled) of which the signal would go in the power amp of your amp .. .. but if I guess correctly you would rather send the signal of some full amp/cab/mic model patches to the PA, and the signal of some pre-amp only based patches to the real amp.. well, surely the signal of the full amp/cab/mic model based patches going directly to the PA need the Studio/Direct output mode.. the good news are that if you don't use/enable the cab/mic model as generally you should better do when sending the signal instead to the power-amp of your amp (ie directly to the amp RETURN input), the chosen output mode doesn't really matter, as it affects only the signal of cab/mic model if enabled. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

That's the way I do it. Assign a controller to it and send the controller via Midi. Only disadvantage is that the controller toggles on/off. No way to send the controller with a value on or off. But as long as you receive all controllers and don't miss one you're fine. Remember you have to connect the FX-Send with the FX-Receive with a Patch-Cable in order to get it working (at least with my HD Pro X, guess the HD 500 is the same). Not sure if I understood correctly.. If you meant to say to connect a patch-cable between the POD FX LOOP SEND and the POD FX LOOP RETURN, I don't see why you ever should.. If that's the case the only good reason I know to do such a connection is to use the FX LOOP block as a level booster. When in the chain the FX LOOP block is turned off it is simply bypassed by the signal (no need for a patch cable) _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips
jrioux
Have we moved to another question? Mine had to do with the easiest way to use the POD to send quality signals to an amp, or to an amp and POD used together, or directly to a monitor or PA, all remotely. As far as I can tell, there is no way to do it. Is that right? (My setup's below, if you can see what I'm trying to do.)
jrioux
Hmm. It will not allow me to upload my setup...

(My setup's below, if you can see what I'm trying to do.) as already mentioned there is no way to change the output mode remotely .. in any case for the signal of the patches made to connect the POD directly to the PA you should always use the Studio/Direct output mode.. for the patches signal that goes from the POD to a miced amp, if you do not enable the cab/mic models (as I think it would be better to do), the chosen output mode does not matter, and therefore you can continue to use the Studio/Direct , so in essence there is no need to change the output mode unless you want to enable the cab/mic model in the POD->AMP patches. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

jrioux
For some reason, I can't post a graphic of my desired setup. Here's the setup in text. Channel 'A' is the 4-cable, channel B bypasses the amp. Both channels end up at my FRFR and then out to the PA. Do you think this will work? Optimally, as I now understand it, I will need to manually switch the output mode from Studio/Direct (when using channel 'B') to one of the 'amp' modes (when selecting channel 'A'). guitar-->tuner-->POD in-->POD SEND-->AMP IN-->AMP SEND-->POD RETURN-->--POD OUT L-->AMP RETURN-->CAB-->MIC-->A (A/B switch)-->Head Rush-->PA -->POD OUT R-->B (A/B switch)-->Head Rush-->PA

jrioux
Very helpful. It took a while to wrap my head around it... so, if I'm getting it now, output modes other than Studio/Direct are used only when we model amps through amps.
