HX Effects and external amp problem

Hey guys,

i just bought an HX effects and I'm using it with the 4CM and it's working great. My problem is with my external amp which is an Engl Iron Ball. I'm able to set my footswitch correctly but it seems the amp is always «in between» channel. The LED on the front panel indicating that i'm on the lead channel is always a bit lit up when i'm on a my clean channel. It lights up completely when i change to the lead channel, but when i come back to the clean channel it never really turn off. Also, as soon as i program a patch with the footswitch on one of the control, i get a lot of weird things like loud hisss, white noise, and a bit more gain than usual on my clean channel (like there's a light overdrive on). Someone told me it could be an impedance problem? I've been around a couple of forum and it seems i'm not the only one with this issue (Engl and Hugh and Kettner notably). Any idea on what a could do?

Thanks a lot in advance for your advices

Are you using stereo (TRS) cables for the footswitches?

Do you have the TRS settings correct in Command Center?

Are you using the HX FX effects loop, or the Ins/Outs?

See Manual Pg 39 "Global Settings>Ins/Outs. Experiment with the different Inst/Line settings.

Engl manuals use a lot of words to convey very little useful information.

They REALLY want you to use their proprietary switches.

Yes i'm using a stereo cable for the footswitch and i believe i've set the connection correctly in the command center since the channel is switching. For the cables set up, i've used the line 6 video for the 4 cables method. So my guitar in Instrument Left, then Send 1 to front amp, FX send from amp to Return 1 on HX, output left from HX to FX Return on amp. For the footswitch, i'm using Pedal/Ext Amp 1 on HX to the 1/4 stereo footswitch plug on the back of my amp. I've already read both manuel but i'll read it again and pay extra attention to the p.39. I know Engl really want to sell their overpriced fotswitch but i kinda bought the HX effects because i could get rid of my actual footswitch so i'll try to figure it out.

Thank you for your time

Only thing I can figure about the light (you said it's switching right) is that it might have something to do with the Engl sending a small amount of power to enable the LEDs on their footswitch. I seem to remember that the Engl I had (long ago) did the same thing with a pedal that DIDN'T have LEDs (Marshall clone). Maybe there's some internal logic in their footswitch that prevents that? You might want to contact their (Engl) support to make sure nothing's being damaged.
