Helix LT update crashed. Cannot factory reset.

Hi,

I would like to start by saying that I have been checking all the posts that solved this issue and I could not get any of those solutions working for me. I'll try to be as clear as possible.

HX Edit proposed an update for my Helix LT, can't remember exactly what it said but I believe it was an update to 2.9. I made a backup and started the update process. Stupid me had not plugged my computer so sadly it went to sleep. When I woke the computer up I could see HX Edit say something like "Update failed" and it suggested that I should restart the Helix LT.

My Helix LT is saying "Boot Failure. Entered Update Mode!" with a ":O" in the top left corner. I know that this is normal during the update process.

HX Edit is showing the Helix LT in the devices menu, but it won't connect. I when I try to connect then it is attempting for a few seconds and finally says "Connection Interrupted".

I tried entering safe mode by pressing 6 and 12 while booting the Helix LT. When I do that I notice that Helix LT is not in the list of devices. HX Edit says connecting for a few seconds until it says "No device connected.".

I have tried reseting the Helix LT by pressing 8 and 9. I come to the "Will reset Globals....." and release the switches but the Helix LT ends up showing "Boot Failure. Entered Update Mode!".

I have uninstalled HX Edit and reinstalled it with the latest version. No improvement.

I do not have a USB hub. I have a Macbook Pro 13" running Mojave and I have used the ports of this computer for all my previous updates without any problems.

I have tried with 5 USB cables to make sure that this is not a cable issue.

Help would be greatly appreciated, I am completely lost here.

I'm in the same boat. Any luck getting it fixed?

it’s a really big help to know exactly what computer, OS and any other info regarding your situation, rather than - me too!

It’s becoming a little tedious having to re-post this stuff over and over again!

“The truth is out there.”

Please ensure that your version of HX Edit and the firmware revision numbers are the same, as it is not unknown for an old version of the editor to launch instead of the latest.

Here ya go - one more time!

And, of course, you did read the instructions because this comment was posted by Digital Igloo in the release notes for the Firmware update.

IMPORTANT! Carefully read and follow the update instructions below. If you don't—and then run to the forums asking why it's not working—the interwebs will make fun of you.

had the same issue - booted and was able to finish update with the line6 updater but not with HX Edit

Sorry, but it isn’t very clear what exactly happened.

Are you saying that now you have managed to update your LT, but your copy of HX Edit doesn’t communicate with it. I stated in the earlier post that you must ensure that your version of HX Edit and the firmware revision numbers are the same.

Please double check, and if necessary, download the correct version of HX Edit.

Hope this helps/makes sense.

I experienced this same problem recently. I was updating my Helix Floor to v2.92 and it crashed during the process. No matter what computer(3 Macs and 1 pc) or usb lead/socket combination I tried it just wouldn't connect.

Weirdly, every Mac I connected to 'saw' the helix as a keyboard (the typing kind) so I suspect this is why I kept getting a 'connection interrupted' message. I think the keyboard setup assistant on the Mac is hanging the process in the background. Not sure about windows 10 but it was doing exactly the same thing 'connection interrupted' so maybe thats not the issue.

I was about to send it back but decided to try 1 last attempt AND IT WORKED!

instead of using the latest version of HX Edit I downloaded the line6 updater version 1.18 and installed that.

Once  I had downloaded the updater and restarted the Mac I ran the software and turned the Helix on.

Bingo! The updater could 'see' the Helix and wanted to update it. I then downloaded the 2.92 firmware so that I could select the 'local file' option (cause, honestly f*ck the internet at this point!)

the update process wasn't too slow AND it was done from ANY OLD usb cable via a usb3 expansion card connected to the Macs mother board so I'm thinking that it doesn't have to be a chassis USB or a particular cable that will get you out of the mess I was in. The line6 updater software was my answer.

HX Edit now works fine and the Helix is running 2.92

I sincerely hope this post helps save someone else a day of tearing their hair out plugging and unplugging usb cables to no avail!

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your input on that particular issue, although it is a technique that I, and others, have posted about many, many times in this forum. There has been point by point instructions for both for PC and Mac users, covering all models of the Helix family.

It appears that most people who encounter any sort of problem during an update simple run off to the internet forums screaming "the new Line 6 firmware update bricked my Helix", with ever bothering to READ THE INSTALLATION NOTES! Plus out of every one of those situations, I have yet to see any where a software installation has actually destroyed the hardware. Like all computer systems, if it don't work, turn it off, reset and re-install.

Then it seems those same people cannot even be bothered to search these threads for this particular solution of doing a "local file" update. It's not a secret, it is well documented, because even in 2020 there are still places where internet connections aren't great and you may need to do it this way -- the option is there. Once more it becomes a situation of them whining and moaning about "why is it all so complicated?" When in fact - It's not - I, along with many others, have be updating my Helix for five years without this nonsense, possibly because we all read study and inwardly digest ALL the information provided about how to update..

Sometimes I truly start to despair about this stuff and say that I will ignore the next cry for assistance, but along with several other stalwart forum users we keep at it. Even gently prodding people in the right direction doesn't seem to make any difference - they all want to be spoon fed. Ye gods, I fear for the sanity of some of the regular contributors on here when we are finally faced with version THREE update.

Hopefully anyone who comes across your post will take heart and follow your advice, because they seem to have ignored all the others, and you have also provided pictures and they are worth a thousand words.

Thank you.

Regards
