Pod go wireless headphones

Hi. I am looking for guidance on suitable headphones for the pod go.  I tend to play 70s 80s rock and metal.  Currently I am considering Breyerdynamic DT 990 PRO and 770s @ 250 ohms and also the AKG702 OR AKG712 PRO.

 

Any advice appreciated; and will 2ohms bo ok without a headphone amp on the pod go or will I need to drop down to I-ohms or so?

I use the DT 990 Pro phones and I’m very happy with them.

Thanks for that.  I was also looking at the 900s but it is a big price jump.

Yes, true. I have tried lower impedance headphones and they’re fine on their own but I find they are generally heavier on the low end and don’t match as well with FRFR speakers. Presets sound more alike when using either the headphones or speakers with the 990s. You’ll find lots of threads here discussing a dramatic difference in how presets sound, and associated preset tweaking required, when using headphones vs. FRFR speakers. I find the higher impedance phones deliver a more similar sound and don’t require tweaking. Easier for me to find settings that work well for both.

 

I like the open-back nature of the 990s as well. I think that also contributes to the less boomy sound.

 

I think any high impedance open back headphones will be good, not necessarily the 990s. I think those are the main features to look for. Comfort is also an important ergonomic factor. You might find something less costly from another manufacturer.

Ideally you should be looking at studio monitor headphones for Pod Go, rather than HiFi headphones, because of the different frequency ranges - Studio Monitor headphones are kind of the equivalent of FRFR. The two most popular and highly regarded headphones for Pod Go at a reasonable price point (circa £125) are the Audio Technica ATH m50x (that come with 3 interchangeable cables - these are the headphones I have) and the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (80 Ohms). 

 

But be careful about the impedance - although high impedance headphones might give some audio quality enhancement (law of depreciating returns applies though), they can also drop volume levels considerably.  It's also a somewhat misleading indicator as it very much depends on headphone design.  The m50x are 35 Ohms but are actually one of the most highly regarded by studio engineers.  Whilst for equivalent quality, the DT770 Pro 80 Ohm are the ones to go for rather than the 32 Ohm version.

Thanks for all of the tips.  I bought the bullet on the DT900 PRO X.  I am completely blown away by the combination of guitar, pod go and phones - simply out of the world experience.  I can’t speak re comparison to having the same tones coming out of headphones, and studio speakers or powered speakers -

that may no matter the the equipment it would require considerable tweaking.  
 

I use the pod go with a Marshall valve amp so it’s  mono, headphones in stereo.  I don’t use it as an interface with my monitors yet.

For me the Dt 900 pro x is comfortable, has great separation, clarity and detail, no issues with volume and is a joy to use.
