Can’t update HX Effects 3.15 from HX edit or updater + failing to load default models on hx edit. HELP!

Hey folks, I’m new to HX but not totally incompetent.

Just picked up a used HX Fx (factory reset). I downloaded the newest version of HX edit and tried to update to 3.15 from 2.51 firmware with no luck. I’ve tried using the Line 6 Updater as well, all with the same results. The update starts, the unit powers off and back on, while the updater says it connects to the DFU, then disconnects DFU, then it says “Line 6 updater is connected”, (the HXFX unit says “updater ready) and shortly after the program crashes. Updating from HX edit is the same result. The HX effects I can do a back up, then start the update. unit powers down, then up and the top left box says “updater ready”.  Then the program crashes.

I’ve tried on my Mac with Big sur 11.15.2 and macbook pro using Mojave. I’ve tried multiple usb cables, into multiple USB ports and dongles for the USB - C on the macbook. Using hx edit 3.15 and 1.25 updater, both 2022 releases. I’ve tried opening the programs with the unit both off first and already on. I’ve left the windows in focus the entire time while trying (big sur issues).  I've disconnected and closed any and all programs connected to my DAW. I’ve allowed for updater to be accessed in my security settings on mac. No matter what I do, its the exact same loop. I’ve done factory resets, I’ve powered up holding the right page arrow to put it into update mode and the same results.

Another thing I’m noticing is even using it without the update, I decided to jsut play around in hx edit with the stock.  I can’t add a block of any default modeler. Every attempt results in an orange box error code (8209) and a text “failed to load model. Service does not support the requested function.”

if anyone can help, tell

me what else to try or of this seems familiar, I could really use the guidance.

thx!

HX Effects

Don’t Panic - It is very rare that a glitch in the firmware will actually turn your device into an paperweight.

I keep saying that I will stop doing this, but here we go again.

Once more from the top!

You mentioned that you were updating your HX to the latest v3.15 firmware, from version 2.51.  I mention this is because, IIRC, the “boot failure” is actually part of the 2.8 update process, when the main system Core was modified. It seems to me this happens when trying to update from firmware versions prior to the Core change, which is what yours was.

Firstly go to the "DOWNLOADS" menu at the top of this page and from  "-Choose Hardware -" select HX Effects. Leave the "-Choose Software-" menu item as it is, now select your Mac OSX from under the "-Choose OS-" tab, then click “Go”. From the next page you can select HX Edit 3.15 for your HX Effects. You will also need the Firmware 3.15 Flash Memory, and the Line 6 Updater version 1.25 - you will need this too.

Download all these items to your computer and note where they are.

Then:

  1. Remove all previous Line 6 software from your computer especially the Windows drivers and then restart your computer.
  2. Make sure to turn off the power to your HX Effects.
  3. Unplug the USB cable from the computer and the HXFX.
  4. Power up the HX Effects while holding down “PAGE >”. Will put the unit in a fail safe update mode. Use this when the HX Effects is in an un-recoverable state. Should doing this give you a completely blank screen, you should be able to re-install the firmware again.)
  5. Leave the HX Effects powered up.
  6. Now you can install the latest HX Edit v. 3.15 (with all the drivers)
  7. Reconnect the USB cable to the HX Effects and your computer - Do not use a Hub. (Some USB ports on the front of a PC can act as a hub, so use one on the back).
  8. Ensure that HX Edit is closed and also shutdown any other background tasks, screen savers etc., also disconnect from any internet services. You don’t want anything to interfere with this installation routine.
  9. Now, find and launch the Line 6 Updater Utility and select "Offline Mode". Your HX Effects and current firmware version should now show up in the window, click on the dark green coloured band and you should now have the option to select a  local file - point it at the Flash Memory 3.15 file you downloaded and let it get on with the update.
  10.  When it completes you will need to perform a Factory Reset on your HX Effects (hold down FS6+TAP while turning the power on) and then you can launch the new HX Edit v.3.15 software and you should be good to go.

No guarantee is given or implied - you do this at your own risk. If this fails, contact Line 6 Customer Support and raise a ticket.

Hope this helps/makes sense.

NOTE:

The reason you cannot use HX Edit to make any changes to your presets is probably because they are on different version numbers - the versions must match the installed firmware. Also, a possible reason for not being able to complete the installation with Line 6 Updater is if HX Edit is still open it will block the connection - please ensure it is not running in the background.

EDIT:

I have just seen your other post regarding this issue over on TGP. Guess I might have wasted my time.

Hey, thanks so much for replying. My new unit will arrive today, and if I have no luck with my initial go, I'm going to follow these instructions so your time was not wasted to me. I really appreciate you spending this much time replying the steps. I've looked the threads over and over and tried almost everything I could find. The seller was very responsive and refunded me saying he thinks it may be a defective unit. Hoping for his sake it wasn't, but I'm moving forward with a new one to try so will keep you posted.

Cheers
