POD HD500X - Unplugging USB cable causes BSOD

Hi all!

I have had a problem with my HD500X causing my PC to crash whenever I unplugged my USB cable from either the PC or the HD500X. This has been going on for several years now. I had a pretty long USB cable and believed that that was the problem. I tried several other computers (all W10 machines). Nothing seemed to help. The other day I ordered a basic laptop with Windows 11 on it so I wouldn't have to run such a long USB cable to my desktop. I got a new shorter USB cable and thought all would be fine. Unplugged the HD500X from the laptop and lo and behold...the SAME $htuff~  :(

I did find out though, that if I shut down the editor first, THEN unplug the USB cable, all is fine!!!!

I did see articles with others having BSODs frequently when using the editor, but mine only did it when disconnecting the USB cable.

It's weird, but I have never had any other product/program cause a BSOD like this in the last 15 years!

This is my first post on the forum, but I thought I would share what I have in hopes that it may help others...

I have this occasionally too.  I believe mine to be a worn usb port.  Like I said it only happens occasionally so I really haven't pursued it.  I'm guessing you could desolder the old one and repair it yourself but unless it is a gig problem I'm not messing with it.  I can't afford a Helix and don't really want anything else unless it is a HD500x which apparently aren't supported anymore.  They don't even appear on their products page.

I run a lean gaming machine so I trim all unnecessary programs, processes and services pretty short.  I think it is a hardware problem.  It seems like it is grounding out or something and causing the USB port on my computer to crash.  I haven't verified this but it is my theory.

Hello to all!
Well, here it is, I don't have much hope to find an answer, but I'll try anyway...
The USB port of my POD HD500 is broken (and I mean only HD500), and I can't program the POD by my computer with the dedicated software; my question is this, can I go through the Midi In and Out ports (and still the PÖD HD500 Edit software) to finally access the settings again? Bottle in the sea...but thank you very much if I have an answer. Olivier

I've not had any luck with USB's alleged ability to plug/unplug. In fact, one time, way back on Windows ME, I used an external hard drive as a backup device so that I could format my computer without losing my data... only to lose the partition because using the eject button is no different than simply unplugging. I always turn my computer off to unplug stuff. And this goes back to Windows ME, maybe even 98.

Plugging in a device is better with newer models, but unplugging still gives me problems... to the point where I don't even try anymore.

But back to the original post:

That makes sense, being that the program(s) are the connectivity between the two.

Also worth noting, get in the habit of plugging in the device before having edit open as well as closing edit before unplugging.

Opening EDIT before the device can lead to some bad results... particularly in a panic when you don't know what is going on and you are concerned you lost everything.

And keeping EDIT open can result in unsaved changes being lost.

And if it doesn't help, then my suggestion is to always turn off your computer before unplugging something.
