HD 500x - Local Control - Unlock setting not working

Hi. I just purchased a used James Tyler Variax and a POD HD500x. I haven't used Line 6 stuff in 15 or more years (Pod XT Live).  There's a lot to learn! I want to be able to change guitar Tone and Volume (and maybe Model down the line) on the guitar itself. But when I use this preset, I can't control any of these despite selecting the Unlocked option.

I have created a Preset in the User 1 Setlist. I have these Mixer settings:

Input 1 Source - Variax

Guitar In-Z (?) - Auto

Input 2 Source - Same

Input Setup - Preset

VDI Input - Tyler Variax

Model - U: Spank-3

Local Control - Unlocked

Variax Control - Preset

Variax Tuning - Don't Force

Tone - 100%

I read that you can assign the Volume, Tone, and Pickup switch as controllers. If they are controlling any effects I'm not noticing it, but if the previous owner did so, I guess I need to know how to undo it.

Any ideas? I appreciate the help.

Surely the Local Control parameter set to Unlocked should allow the guitar Volume and Tone controls to work normally. If this does not happen there is an anomaly or the patch is corrupted (perhaps created with a different firmware version).

As for the active model of the Variax, it should never be changed automatically by the patch when the Model parameter is set to: (don't force).

I would recommend opening a new empty patch and recreating the preset from scratch copying all parameters except those of the Variax (thus leaving the Variax defaults as they are) and then save it.

Thanks hurghanico for the quick response. I will later try to recreate the patch, though I did create it from scratch on the current/latest firmware.  I believe I used the term Preset incorrectly. I created it from an excellent YouTube video overview of HD Edit.  I like your thinking - I will also create another one with minimal effects and setting - just trying to get Unlocked working properly.

Regarding Don't Force, for Model I have Spank-3. I guess I should set Model to Don't Force if I want to change it on the guitar, I had it set to Spank-3 and thought I might be able to change it on the fly by turning the Model knob on the guitar. Lesson learned.

Is there anything I need to do on the JTV59 to be more receptive to patch changes/controls. Specifically the Model switch? This seems unlikely, but maybe the Model knob should be up or down?

Thanks again!

Steve

There is nothing you need to do on the guitar.

*** SUCCESS ***

It turned out there were other things not working too. Not just Unlocked. For instance, I could not successfully assign anything using the Controller pane.  Including trying to assign a Volume Pedal to the JTV Volume knob :) . Assignments to Exp 1 also fai

So i pulled up Workbench to see of there was anything there. It failed to download any models from the Variax. All models showing "???????????".  I had the latest Variax firmware but reinstalled it, and now everything seems to be working. Whewwwww.

Thanks for your help with this!
