Converting Spider IV 150 into a head only… wiring question

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, sorry if this post annoys anyone but I’m hoping someone can give me a nice simple answer.

Currently own a Spider IV 150 combo (I’ve had this absolute workhorse for over 12 years now!!) I have the tones dialled in pretty good in that time.

Long story short means I need it to be a bit more portable and doesn’t necessarily need the speakers anymore so I’m going to convert it into a head only. I’m pretty handy with wood and saws etc and can pretty much build one for no cost whatsoever.

Question is on wiring… obviously the 150 has all the output jacks on the back of the head already, so what would be the best option with the existing wires that go to the speakers? Can I just blank them off with some wire wrap and leave them inside? Or would I need to remove them from inside completely?

Any and all answers welcome

TIA

psarkissian:
I have the same amp without cabinet/speakers. It is totally silent, no "popping" when switched on or off (one speaker connected to speaker connectors)...
The history is, that the main amp transistors were blown, and amp was taken out from the cabin. Time went by, and cabin with speakers was selled. And now the transistors got renewed, but the amp is still dead. I got this amp, because I changed a packet of coffee to this non working amp without cabinet.

Do you know, is it seeking only resistive load, or allso inductive? What is the impedance of original speakers? Now I only have one 8 ohm ~100W speaker at hand. Does it need both speakers present in order to start working?

THX in advance! And it is a previlige to discuss with a legend!

1) "Do you know, is it seeking only resistive load, or also inductive? " --- Speakers are by their nature a lumped characteristic, as impedance is made up of resistance, capacitance and inductance.

2) "What is the impedance of original speakers? " --- 8 Ohms.

3) "Now I only have one 8 ohm ~100W speaker at hand. Does it need both speakers present in order to start working? " --- Yes,... using one can stress the circuitry on the other output amp over time. An open and unloaded output is like,... sending a wave of water towards a wall, then watching the wave slap back at the subsequent incoming waves. Not good for the circuitry on that channel.

Not a legend yet,... but thank you just the same.
