HX Stomp 4CM with real amp drastically changes the amp's tone

I just got an HX Stomp to use with my Peavey Invective as a multi fx unit via 4cm. The HX Stomp ruins my amp's tone; it almost sounds like it's out of phase, and I can't figure out what the problem is.

Guitar > HX In L > HX Send > Amp In > Amp Send > HX Return L > HX Out L > Amp Return

Using a brand new HX Stomp patch with only a mono FX Loop L block and TS cables. The Invective fx loop is serial. I have tried all the global i/o and patch i/o parameters, and have everything set to instrument level, and 100% mix on the fx loop block and center panning... there is no dry pass thru anywhere.

If I bypass the fx loop on my amp so the HX Stomp is just sending input to the front of the amp, it sounds normal and there is not audible tone change. If I remove the HX cables from the amp's fx loop, and just use a regular TS cable in the send/return of the amp's fx loop, there is no audible tone change, so I know the tone change is caused by the HX Stomp.

It's hard to believe the tone change is normal since it's so dramatic, but I'm all out of ideas of what else to try.
